VRS Mk1 - Do I have a running problem?

Featured Replies

Hi,

very recently bought a mk1 VRS. It was the second vrs I have driven so only have 1 other car to compare mine to which was a 10 min test drive of another one.

I bought this car because it was the much better car overall but the more I drive it, the more I feel that it is just not 'quite' as quick as the other one I test drove. Now nothing seems out of the ordinary - turbo definately kicks in, not limp mode etc. but just doesn't have quite as much kick.

2 things strike me to start with - either the other car was possibly mapped (however said nothing about it in the ad - and the dealer had no clue) but the difference is not that substantial IMO

also on the other car I heard a distinctive whoosh from the turbo whereas on my car I do not but there is definately a turbo kick of some sort so im not sure whats going on, Maybe a small boost leak I dunno but surely a boost leak would make the turbo sound louder?

Any suggestions greatfully recevied.

Cheers

Fault code scan or a log of boost values with VCDS would be a good place to start.

The other car been mapped is definitely an option though, and don't rule it out. First vRS that I bought was mapped but I didn't know (nor did the garage I bought it from) I took it to get mapped, and only found out then. Surprise, and disappointment all in one!

As chicken_eyebrow says, get it scanned first of all. If there's no faults and the car is running fine then the only answer is to get it mapped and enjoy it!

Good luck

Thanks for the replies, where do i get started with the bits I need for VCDS or fault code scanning?

Cheers

Did you lift of the engine cover? There could quite easily be a split breather pipe which would make it feel sluggish.

The other one would of had an uprated DV, panel filter which would give the turbo a different sound. Also potentially the other one could of had the wrong dump valve.

Wrong petrol

dirty throttle body

potential re-map - if it is not substantial it is probably not this.

A boost leak would make it sound quieter because you have less boost.

Before mines was mapped turbo was silent

Now you can hear the turbo spooling up, so mapped is an option! Either that or you have got used to your power now! Anyway you look at it, its remap time

Fault code scanners for VAG cars can be bought for £20 or less off ebay

You can get VCDS cables off of ebay as well for £10 or so then download the free version of VCDS lite from here:

http://www.ross-tech...load/index.html

Or if you have an IPhone or SmartPhone you can buy a bluetooth OBD-II adaptor like this:

http://www.ebay.co.u...=item19c9ec554f

And get the Android or Iphone App "Torque" which lets you connect to the car and do most of the same stuff as the other two things above.

OR get on the local section of these forums and ask if theres anyone in your area with the full version of VAG-Com who will come and check your car with it for a few beer tokens.

If you check out what boost the car is making that should be a good clue as to whether the turbo is running right or not. A standard VRS should be making 10psi or 0.7bar boost.

I bought one of those OBD2 Blue tooth adaptor and I have to say that it is the best thing I have bought for my car! The android app makes like so easy.
