I was in Heaven!

Featured Replies

I went to the McLaren Technology Centre this week to photograph one of our students who was on placement there.

What more can I say - I was in Heaven!

This place is built to impress. And it accomplishes this in bucket loads. Just arriving is like entering the MIB building. Rounds lifts. Endless white corridors. Glass. Chrome. Slate.

And the cars! I've actually touched Ayrton Senna's McLarens - all of them. And Alain Prosts too. Knee deep in F1 history I was. Amazing. Such an impressive building with these lines of historic cars.

The workshops are cleaner than an NHS operating theatre. Pure white and not a greasy smudge anywhere.

Even the loos were designed to within a thou or two.

I spent about 4 hours there - mostly looking about and taking a pic or two. Sadly I could only photograph Lewis Hamilton's 2008 championship car - which is probably the ugliest on the lot. Bits of carbon fibre fins sticking out all over it like a cross between a box of lego and a Gremlin.

Still think the late 80's and early 90's cars were the best looking. Pure and clean lines with a purposeful look.

I'd say heaven would probably resemble the playboy mansion but your heaven is a close second!

You're a lucky chap, I'd love to spend a few hours looking around there. Did you get a look at the new factory where they build the MP whatever it is?

You lucky sod. A friend of a friend works for a company who supplies nuts and bolts for them. He's been a few time but says photos are strictly off limits

Sadly I was only allowed to photograph said student with the 2008 car and in the electronics area in which he was working. I wasn't allowed to go about snapping away I'm afraid. I did use the white corridor as well as it was a cool setting. Bit like a Jamiroquai video.

Had lunch at their canteen too! More like a 5* restaurant. So much choice too. The lifts are circular and glass, going up and down in glass tubes and resemble pistons whilst the reception desks are supported on a mezzanine floor by pillars shaped liked valves. The even reception desks make the USS Starship Enterprise look like an IKEA reject student project. The VIP areas have real suede wallpaper and artworks beyond imagination. This is a place to make some serious impressions.

Awesome!

It was weird how all the historic cars had all the Marlboro branding removed after the ban. Made them look a little strange to how I remember them.

Would love to go round there.

You are very lucky.

Yeah, but no, but. . . I'm sure it would be the same at Playboy Mansion - Look but Don't Touch. I'd rather look at cars that I couldn't drive than women I couldn't, if you know what I mean ;)

There's plenty of ways to get into a woman - not so many ways to get into McLaren.
