Coil packs 'lifting'?

Featured Replies

My vRS is standard, every now and then it runs a bit less than smoothly (still think I need new N75 too) - when take the engine cover off the coil packs need pushing back down - they're not totally off but just don't seem 'clicked down' enough (I'm changing the plugs to see if that makes a difference)

Anyone experience this? I couldn't see any numbers on the packs to suggest they are the old ones that were 'recalled'

Look on ebay for ecs coil pack hold downs

You'll have to move the vacuum box from coil 4 but should resolve your issues

Normally happens with remapped cars, or if you haven't got the plugs gapped properly.

I would check and re-gap the plugs to start off with as that's free. If it's still popping the packs then you could consider buying or making some coil-pack hold downs.

Obviously is common then!

Thanks, firstly I'll check the gaps (although prob could do with a new set as these been in about 3 years) then try the hold downs

Please could someone explain why the plug gaps can cause this problem?

is it more to do with a certain make of plug?as a lot of my mates run cars with 1.8t(mapped tt,s3,vrs,and a stage 2 polo gti)and none have had any probs, me included :/

Please could someone explain why the plug gaps can cause this problem?

From the threads on here in the past it's been due to the incorrect gap causing misfires which loosen the coilpack boot on the plug body.

i'd be more inclined to see if you have had the coil pack recall done, and then change your spark plugs

this may very well cure your "lifting" problem for the price of some plugs and fitting and is a much better long term solution than the hold downs

Plus your engine is trying to tell you something when this happens :p

Yeah it's telling me it's not quite right!

I did look at the part number on the coil packs, don't the ones that needed replacing end in Y or something? (I'll search the forum and find out)

Cheers
