LED Sidelights - Legal or Not?

Featured Replies

As per the topic title - are these things legal.

If they are, does anyone know the best type to purchase for use on a '04 MK1 Fabia VRS?

cheers

If they aren't 'e' marked then they are technically illegal to be used on the road, though the odds of being stopped if they are white or a tester failing them are minimal.

i passed my Mot 2 weeks ago with my LED side lights

Ive got LED side lights but changing them as at night everything white gets a blue tint, ie when i pull up my drive and park infront of the front door with just side lights on the white front door clearly has a blue tint. The ones i have fitted are a bright white. With headlights on they look fine.

Paint the door blue!

This is where it gets confusing: It's not illegal - it's unlawful if not 'e' marked. Only VOSA actually care about this, but they don't get the MOT guys to check, and the police couldn't give a toss if they're white. Latest guidance suggest as long as they're white, they're alright! :)

That doesn't necessarily mean it legal.

My Mercedes 190d went through two MOTs with a 370bhp Cosworth engine. That doesn't mean the engine swap was legal, it only meant the two MOT blokes were stupid buggers.

In the UK, there is no legal implication for changing the engine over in a vehicle. The only thing you have to do is tell the DVLA the new engine number (if known) & any change in displacement, and tell your insurer of the modification, both of these are not legal requirements as such.

The MOT is there to ensure the vehicle is basically safe to drive & safe for pedestrians.

Yes, that's the definition for the Swedish SBP test. SBP and MOT are exactly the same thing. Except you lot are allowed to do all kinds of yummy things while we aren't. They fail engine swaps just like they would fail a cracked brake line. An engine swap is considered unsafe. Well until you pay them 500 euros, then its safe again.

Are you willing to risk a copper thinking your whiter (than yellow) LED bulbs actually appear blue?! I wouldn't risk it, personally. There's always some thick Police officer willing to throw his weight around and pull you over for the most minor of issues. I'd much rather use an e-marked bulb so if I do get pulled over, I know I can be arsey back to them, let them try fine me and take me to court or whatever, and in the end I'll win. Plus if I pull my phone out and video record them, there'll be a nice youtube vid of the occasion :D

There are some e-marked upgrade sidelight bulbs, such as Philips Bluevision, and Osram Hyper Cool Blue, which appear whiter and a little brighter. ISTR there might be some e-marked LED bulbs around, but they are very expensive.

There are no e-marked led sidelight bulbs, period.

The e-marking system will only allow like-for-like replacement, i.e., filament bulb for filament bulb. a Sidelight bulb is just that - a bulb.

The issue of e-marking is a civil matter, not a criminal one, so unless you are running a non-white bulb, the police don't give a toss - there is nothing they can do.

The police would have a field day, if they had the time, checking coloured LEDs on some of the ornately lit trucks, they may all be classed as Sidelights !
