2011 Octy VRS Handling

Featured Replies

I'm not sure if this subject has been covered before but has anyone had issues with the handling of their Octavia VRS. On a straight road at speed my car feels nervous. It is just the same as before I fitted my new wheels. Now, before someone says "don't drive fast". I am going to Germany on holiday, as I do most years & I want to feel safe at speed. My last car (10 reg Seat Leon FR tdi 170) felt rock steady at 138 mph, flat out & the year before I drove my Passat R36 at 165 mph, not flat out & that was rock steady.

I am hoping that someone will say "yes I had the same problem & then I fitted WALK & the problem went away". Anyone :S

First stop, a full four wheel alignment. Check tyre pressures and check wheel balance.

+1 for 4 wheel alignment, made a noticeable improvement. I agree though, I've driven a 530d flat out in Germany a couple of times, and it's more steady than the Octy is at lower speeds

This.

I've had mine up to 142mph it felt ok but my 525d i had at 155mph and felt rock solid all done on private roads ;)

I agree with the op i feel my cars sometimes not that steady at speed compared to my last car bmw 120i 2005. but when i looked under the beemer the bootom was flat like a F1 car so maybe that had something to do with it. But it also depends on the road to, Im not even talking about silly speeds.

Topic was covered few times. If you dont have long drive to Leeds I would suggest to visit us ABC Car Service. Read reviews of few members here on forum. Worth a check of your suspension. I bet you have alignment issue - maybe something else as well.

Mine is much better since I had the alignment done on the hunter system, worth getting it checked mate

Agree with the above. Alignment. Mine wandered all over the place from new.

Full alignment done. 'Wheels in Motion' in Chesham. Highly recommended!

Now steady as a rock at speed.

It's also the suspension. I'd upgrade the dampers and springs.

Thank you for the helpful replies.......... as a matter of interest I am waiting for AutoTechnica in Hull to get a set of Eibachs (lowered 20mm) and a set of Koni FSD's for me and then I will get them fitted, hopefully solving my problem

It will! trust me, thats the best improvement you can do on a VRS, I would follow up with an uprated rear arb and WALK ( whiteline anti-lift kit) it will make for a more comfortable and far better handling car than skoda ever dreamt of!

I've always thought the ride on the standard vrs suspension setup was a bit jittery. If you're having eibachs and konis fitted you'll need your alignment doing anyway.

Standard suspension is OK as long as the set-up is right which for some inexplicable reason was not for mine when new. The handling changed night and day by getting the alignment adjusted to where it should be and sits pretty at any sensible speed in the UK. I haven't tried the sort of speeds you are talking of but given the above I would not think the springs and dampers would make much difference. Worth doing for general handling perhaps, certainly once the OEM dampers expire.

Have taken your advice & have ordered those parts :hi:

You won't regret it!! :hi::rofl:

A lot of the jittery ride is down to the wheels made of lead ;)

First mod I made before suspension was light alloys - feels much nicer. 5kg per corner difference eases the work the springs and shocks need to do no end.

I've since put eibachs on standard shocks and it's pretty good. When the shocks wear I'll just replace with bilsteins.

Personally fsds feel strange

As for rear anti roll bar - not sure it needs a stiffer one. I prefer the softer roll which you can use to your advantage to get the rear to swing.

Autotechnica will do your 4 wheel alignment as well. Not sure what system they have but I know Ricci Concept in Hull have a 'state of the art 4 wheel alignment' kit - they are pretty expensive for the alignment though.

if you're after good high speed stablilty I would go for bilstein B6 shocks

My car is on OE dampers with Eibach springs and it feels planted at all speed. However I have the S3 rear console bushs fitted so there is no play on the wishbone anymore. The standard one is a voided bush and has plenty of flex. Thats why it wont feel planted as the front arms are flexing about. Try changing those to the S3 or poly bush the consoles then have an alignment. I would try that first and see how the car feels.

Is there any downsides to the S3 bush at all - noise/vibration etc?

Cheers 56

Looking forward to Wednesday when AutoTechnica fit my new shocks, springs, WALK + new whiteline front bushes & rear 24mm adjustable ARB. Will report on what differences I notice when the work is done
