Tablet for mainly viewing PDF's

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Now that more magazines are on PDF I would like a gadget to view PDF's on.

I know ipad & Galaxy Tab are the best, but hey, I bought a SKODA instead of an Audi because I want GREAT value over branding (plus I don't like spending money! :giggle: ).

Budget is around £250 max. And it seems that around 10" is a must (so to speak).

I was looking at Motorola Xoom but Argos price just jumped £30 since Sunday night :wall: And I have read it has 16:9 screen. Magazines are more like 4:3 ratio, so I am looking that that type of screen. That seems to leave ipad (too pricey) or cheap ebay tablets.

Someone said on another post they had a ONDA Vi40. Anyone else got a cheap tablet? I see there are 'Scroll Extreme' and 'EKEN A90'

I really just want it for PDF and simple web surfing. Not interested in games or social media stuff.

Thanks.

With your budget you could easily get a used original 16gb wifi ipad and have £50 change or for £35 over budget a used ipad2 16gb wifi. A lot of the 'no name' Chinese tablets can be difficult for software upgrades and support is non existent, the bigger names tend to be ipad money but not ipad build quality. That said the xoom's will get cheaper again as they've been trying to push them out of the warehouses for a long time now so expect a drop sooner or later.

Kindle will read pdfs if you're not so bothered about colour.

Someone has an Asus Transformer in classifieds under your budget.

Although not the aspect ratio you're after, I'm posting this on a HTC flyer (cost £190 from ibood). Seems to more than capable of surfing the web and the odd PDF....

I've got the tf101, its not bad but think its not that portable unless you have big hands, I originally wanted the 9inch or 8 as its the perfect size imo. You'd want something of decent size otherwise just get a phone to do it. Like galaxy note.

Bought the HTC flyer for the better half's mum, she loves it and reads all the time on it. Personally find it tad slow but ok size. Suppose you don't need speed for pdf.

I find friends tablets have issues with editing Microsoft files and the alternative apps do the job but mess up formatting, formulas or other important settings as most mobiles do

Until better in this regard I'll stick with a laptop or netbook.

Kindle is fine for text only PDF's but is pretty cr@ppy if there are graphics involved - which I would imagine there will be with magazines.

Thanks for your input guys. I ended up buying the one off the forum. Cheers gadgetman for telling me.

Just getting to grips with Android!

Slider - chap at work brought his Kindle in. Magazine PDF's were not very good as there are lots of different text columns and pics. Technical papers would be ok. Screen is great for plane txt though.
