FL 1.6 TDI S - quick review

Featured Replies

Had one as a courtesy car the past 3 days.

A metallic black "12" plate, 1.6 CR TDI, in S spec. So essentially, a taxi!

Good points:

- Comfy ride

- Pleasant interior

- New car smell

- Plenty of room

- Very good stereo, highly impressed with the speakers!

- Quicker than the last 1.6 TDI I drove (if pushed, I might describe it as "adequately nippy")

- Seemed to be decently economical (no computer, due to S spec, but £7 of diesel got me 60 miles)

Bad points:

- Diesel

- Rattly (especially with the windows open)

- Runs out of puff quickly when pressing on

- S spec is pitiful, no computer so they fill the screen with a big outside temp readout, horrible scratchy plastic wheel and gearknob, no remote locking, manual windows in the back

- Looks... It's an odd one. As a vRS, the FL is a handsome car, however, a mate of mine very eloquently described this car as follows: "truely awful looking car, looks like something the chinks would knock out... looks like one of those made up cars for an insurance ad. Old octavia with a Labia front grille, a set of corsa d headlamps and a set of halfords wheel trims.....". Sadly, I'm inclined to agree. It looks like it's on stilts, on tiny little wheels!

Overall I was impressed, and could probably live with it day to day if I had something else exciting in the garage. Or, more realistically, this as vRS TSI :)

Couldn't but help how neatly you "parked" the courtesy car

Black Neptunes on it would make it look better as a start

More importantly, what did you think about Simpson's ? BTW, we all know that diesel is best but in a vRS.

Car is parked very neatly, thank you :)

Simpsons are brilliant, always had very good service from them!

I've owned a 10 plate 1.6 CR S spec since January last year, very pleased with how it drives overall but definately woeful in terms of refinement. I like the pull of the engine, but I'm also acutely aware of my lack of comparison. The only other car I've owned was a second hand Ford in the US which despite a 2.0L engine, could do 22 mpg and 0-60 in about a week!

I wish we had had the time to wait for an SE or Elegance spec to come along at the right price, but at the time of buying we had just moved back to the UK and needed a car quick. Our decision process in the Alex Laurie showroom was probably the same as someone having eaten a large bag of cocaine and then asked to make a complicated and informed decision......THAT ONE, I'LL TAKE THAT ONE. On the plus side, it gave us what we needed: ISOFIX for little one, large boot, low tax and high mpg. Now I spend my time on Briskoda looking at everyone else's wheels with ever-increasing car evny!
