Help- 2.0 TDi (170) or 1.8 TSi?

Featured Replies

Guys, im planning on buying a used Superb 2 soon coming from a Mk1 Octavia vRS. I'm having difficulty in deciding which engine to go for.

I definately want DSG in elegance spec.

Now it appears both enigine's have pro's & con's- 2.0 = more fuel econemy and torque. 6 speed wet clutch, however needs cambelt changes.

1.8 more power, less torque, is it smoother & quieter? 7 speed dry clutch but has hill hold as standard and is chain driven. I understand the seven speed DSG has had problems? Has this been rectified as i m looking at a 2011 car.

The other concern is my commute- only 6 miles in each direction so that won't do the DPF in the diesel anygood!

I am appealing for superb drivers who may have changed from 1.8 tsi to 2.0 tdi or vice vesa. Like to hear your opinions.

Regards,

Neil

hi black vrs

if miles to the gallon is not your worry then the petrol is the better choice, quieter and smoother than the diesel and less to go wrong.

and if your not happy with the power you can always have a remap to increase the torq of the engine.

Does a direct injection turbocharged petrol engine have less to go wrong than a direct injection turbocharged diesel engine?

I would use the DPF as the decision maker. If your driving patterns don't suit a DPF car then the TSI could be better. At 6 miles (urban or rural?) it's probably the clincher. How long do you plan on keeping the car?

At least five years- my commute is rural, i have always had petrol engined car's however as i want the DSG i really fancy the effortless torque of a diesel. Will a 6 mile commute kill the DPF?

I know a 2.0tdi A4 which is nearby and 2008 model. It gets similar usage (6-7 miles from town, rural) and has had only one issue which was a DPF sensor failing.

If it was a 6 mile urban commute it would be worse.

remember also that clutch change on 7 spd dsg is quite expensive ! Mine had to be changed at around 90 000 km got it under warranty . The mpg was also bigger differnce that i ecpected, during to years as taxi the 170 had 0.58 in avr. 1.8 had 0.82 liters pr 10 km . The 1.8 a little more fun to drive at low speeds. 2.0 stronger on highway !

Providing you do a longer run regularly to get everything nice and hot and to give the DPF a chance to regen if it needs to, then I don't see why you shouldn't go for the diesel.

If you are only doing small mileages and not doing a great deal of annual mileage then the petrol may be the cheaper option overall.
