Is there any Skoda registered technicians, on this site who could answer a question for me, with reference to vag timing( using the vag tool) and vag-com.

thanks

VCDS (the new name for vag-com) and 'the vag tool' do the same thing, but VAG/VAS1552 or similar is far less friendly.

Both put the pump injection into basic mode so you see the 'mechanical setting' without any dynamic adjustment. In both cases, group 0 values are displayed.

VCDS has the big advantage that it interprets the values for you and you can plot the timing.

e.g. Coolant temp: VCDS displays in °C, for VAS you have to know that 73 in field 7 is 85°C.

Do you have a specific question?

rwbaldwin,

I do have a specific question, does the vag/vas1552 plot a graph as vcds.

I had my cambelt and water pump replaced by the local skoda dealership, on wednesday last week, on thursday the vehicle was difficult to start, and when it did, it misfired breifly and then white smoke for a few seconds as soon as I drove away it cleared. Returning home after work I checked with my vcds and it reported timing too retarded to plot, you could just see dots on the bottom line of the graph.

Friday morning 4 attemps to start and the same again smoke on start up, so I rang the dealership and spoke to the service manager, and returned the car for them to check today,Saturday, 9am phone call from them to say the car was difficult to start, they have checked the timing and say it's within spec, but don't know whats wrong with it.?

I am an accredited Toyota and Ford technician, with 40 years experience ,the only reason I had them do this cambelt change is, because I have recently donated a kidney and am on light duties for the present time.

So is vcds more accurate the vag/vas1552 system, or due you think they have just looked at the mechanical reported timing.

I would appreciate your views and comments.

Both use exactly the same data in basic mode, so the results should be the same.

VAS doesn't produce a graph. For a given value of fuel temperature, you look up the target value from a graph and physically adjust the timing until you are close to that target.

If I saw a car with symptoms you describe, my first question would be 'when was the cambelt last changed?'

Sounds like the dynamic timing hasn't been checked and set.

This is what I told their service manager, I thought that the dynamic timing had not been set, and then for them to ring me 1/2 hour after they opened this morning to say could find no fault with the timing ?

This is the 3 belt change since I bought the vehicle, the second one I did myself, having bought the locking tools and vag com full version.

I am going to collect the car tomorrow, and will be taking my laptop with me, it may be a bit over the top, but having just paid £ 390.00 I think the job should be done correctly and if it's still out I will be taking the matter further.

Hi Tech1e

I have collected the car this morning, bad starting again,4 goes at starting and then white smoke, unburnt diesl.

There was no one there from service, as I would expect, so I had one of the sales guy's watch me warm the car up and then put the vcds on the car, showing him the result of the dynamic timing, still shows, timing too retarded to plot.

The service dept left me a copy of there dynamic timing, can you confirm that the vag/vas prints out the readings or do you have to take readings from the system and copy them to the paper work ?

I have just taken a few pic's of the pump sprocket, and the adjusting bolts are at one end of the slotted sections, so no adjustment in one direction.

Just a quick update,I have spoken to an Audi tech this evening, who has said that if the bolts in the pump sprocket are at one end of the adjustment, it has not been timed up correctly, would anyone else like to comment on this ?

I will be contacting the dealership tomorrow, to see what they have to say for them selves.

what course of action would you take ?
