Fitting an alternator ....how easy a job?

Featured Replies

How easy is it to replace and fit an alternator to a 1.3mpi felicia,i,ve heard you need special tools for the belt??is this correct??

depends if it has power steering or not?

For non-power steered cars, an alternator change is a very simple job...can be done at the roadside, with basic tools. [just watch the radiator core when undoing nuts , connections, etc at the back of the alternator...a piece of cardboard placed over the rad on the driver's side is useful].......might be best to disconnect the batter beforehand too...??

I found the ribbed drive belt a bit fiddly to replace [more so than an old vee-belt, anyway]....

For power steered cars, best to ask someone else on here.

yes it has got power steering, how much difference does it make??

The main difference is getting the tension off of the ribbed drive belt. I've never done a Felicia with one, but all the other cars I've had with one have been easy enough given the right size spanner/lever used to take the tension off of the ribbed belt tensioner (it's automatic, whereas the non-power steering one is manually adjusted by the alternator position), and once you've popped the belt off, it's should be as easy as disconnect battery, undo connections (two on rear), undo bolts, reverse to fit the new one.

the power steering one is an arse to do  whoever designed that tensioner needs one shoving up his arse lol.

the easy way is to use a long thin lever bar between the tensioner arm and the tensioner pulley and lever it away. once the belt is off the rest is simple.

have fun.

oh there is a tool to do the tensioner but I've never successfully got it to work and use the above method instead
