Smaller Aerial

Featured Replies

Has anyone replaced their aerial with a shorter one?

If so, where did you buy it from and how much did you pay?

Cheers

Not done it yet but I do fancy trying to fit the one off swmbo's monte Carlo. The base looks the same so I can't see why it won't fit

i got a c3 aerial fitted to mine.

C3 aeriel

Don't get a metal one reception is shocking with them and the grub screw bolt can corrode into the base and when you come to put it back to normal you may have to replace the base aswell

Ah thanks for the heads up! I guess you get what you pay for don't you!

6J Ibiza Aerial,

Looks standard bit is 30% shorter

About 5 or 6 quid from the stealers or TPS

Oh and no loss of reception!

I bought the standard vw short one from dealers. No probs with fitting or reception.

Part number 6r0 035 849 £12 that's with a little discount.

Looks good but only got it because the old one was catching off the washing line. :)

Just like this one here http://www.clubpolo.co.uk/forum/lofiversion/index.php/t233570.html

Honda ariel also a straight swap, good reception to.

As said Honda aerial is perfect fit with no loss of reception (s2000 are popular choice)

Latest Polo aerial is good and the Yeti and FL Octavia now use the short aerial.

I have a vw shark fin aerial, some people have reception issues but mine seems fine!

Hey mate,

I like your shark fin aerial. Bet that was a bugger to fit?!

Looks great though - wouldn't mind one myself, but don't think I'd be able to get the roof lining back in!

Is the signal strength still strong?

Wasn't hard to fit at all mate. Took about 20 mins all in, and the reception is absolutely fine with no loss of signal or station on the move

Where did you get your shark fin from?

TBH, I wouldn't know where to start in getting the roof lining off!

Tps mate. Sorry but don't have a part number but I'm thinking it's off a mk5 golf. The lining is easy, just take off the 2 rear grab handles and the plastic from the rear, then the door seals and the lining drops down.

Nope not that one.Thats not a genuine OEM aerial.Somebody in this section had one of those and said its utter cr*p.

S2000 aerial is double that length.

Reception depends on where you live, I never got good reception with the standard aerial, and the short one is the same untill I travel into the city

Tried the aerials above and they get bad signal. Will stick with the original one for now.

Thanks anyway.

Not surprised.

Quick theory lesson ,follows. For best reception ( at FM) , there's two choices - half wave ,or quarter wave. Quarter wave is smaller ,so is preferred. I'd doubt if there's anything in the aerial amp to compensate for size of aerial.( as in military vehicles, which definately makes the costs spiral)

FM band is 108 - 88 MHz -and the wavelength of a recieving aerial is measured in metres(= Lambda) . Formula is Lambda = 300*10 exp 6 / frequency.

That's a full wavelength. For a quarter ,divide by four. But then what length do you make it. The best choice is a compromise =108-88 = 20 . 108-10 = 98. ( 98 is optimum value)

300*10 exp 6 /98= 33.3m ./ 4 = 8 & a bit . But hang on, that's the size of the aerial ,not the wound length, as most stubs are wound , with wire running round the stub , to IMHO increase the length of the reception aerial ,and get closer to a quarter wave length .

Answer any questions ?

well my next question was....do you have any spare time?

Buy hey you just answered it...cheers

i have a short "bee-sting" style aerial fitted that I bought back when i was 17 for my Punto, took a wee bit of fiddling but it worked and the reception isn't any worse, although where i live it's stil pretty bad even with the standard one.
