Should I have ordered light assist!?!?!?!?

Featured Replies

Been getting mixed news about this light assist(ordered it on new Octavia...caus it was cheap...)Dont fancy it coming on in shadows/not going off at all/knackering the battery etc etc.Need to know what you lot think...worth it...or a pain......(Still -the nights are getting lighter now!)

what is it?

Automatically puts your side lights on with the ignition (A la Volvo) turns headlights on in the dark, it also leaves your headlights on for a pre determined length of time when you get out of the car (see you home function)

It's a

Mine doesn't, but I have Xenons, does the rest though, come on if the wipers are on and if you go over approx 82mph for x period of time, no matter how bright it is.

Crikey, how deeply annoying, glad mine's not got it.

whats the point in that then? Sign for the police to pull you over

I've got it on mine. Hated it to start with, as it seemed to switch the lights on for no apparent reason, and it would then leave them on for ages. However, I've got used to it, and I quite like it now. It's not foolproof, and you do need to override it from time to time, but on the whole I'm glad I ordered it now. It used to leave the headlights on for over a minute if you parked the car and it thought it was dark - which REALLY annoyed me, but I studied the manual, and was able to switch that off. So it switches the headlights on when you unlock the car if it thinks it's dark (which I like), and switches them on when you're driving if:

1. The light falls below a certain level (this can happen sometimes in bright sunshine - the shade confuses it)

2. The wipers are running for more than a minute or so

3. You drive faster than 140 km/h for more than a minute or so.

If it's raining you should have your dipped main beam on. So '2' seems like the right thing to do.

If you are on a motorway for visibility you probably should have your dipped main beam on anyway. It is illegal to drive on your side lights when out of town over 30 (or was it 40) mph in the UK.

I never, ever, ever drive on sidelights as they are a waste of time.

Don't understand why people are so hung up about having a visible car anyway? MPG won't change significantly enough to worry about, and people may even see you and let you go past rather than not spotting you till you're up their boot

I always stick my side lights on especially in the mornings when people are half asleep

I always have sidelights on - too many years driving SAABs and Volvos

I'm used to riding everywhere with dipped headlights on , but only on my bike. :D

It's to do with not obscuring other cars. If everyone is driving around with their headlights on, the one bloke obeying the highway code is less visible. Sidelights to be seen, headlights to see.

Since when?

I normally drive with the sidelights on, never had any trouble in years of driving.

Mines a passover from riding bikes for years. Old habits.

i always drive with minimum of sidelights on, just a habit and one i guess may help get seen more easily!!

i quite often have my side lights on, just to see the dials and things a little clearer.

what i think he meant is that yhou can drive round town with only your side lights on as long as there are street lights but you must have your dipped beam on if not enough/no street lights

I thought that if there were street lights then you don't need to have any lights on?

sides minimum i think, gonna go look at the highway code now

that was quick and painless

93: You MUST

use headlights at night' date=' except on restricted roads (those with street lights not more than 185 metres (600 feet) apart and which are generally subject to a speed limit of 30 mph)

use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced (see Rule 201).

ensure all sidelights and rear registration plate lights are lit at night.

Laws RVLR regs 24 & 25 & RV(R&L)R reg 19

Gets the buggers in front out of the way especially if you have Xenons ;)

Light assist sounds like a waste of money and pointless to me :thumbdwn:

I only use side lights when parked.

I always use dipped headlights while driving, and don't see the point in just using sidelights, as it makes you less visible to other road users. :P

They come as standard on an L&K ;)

I ordered Light Assist ...

I also have the MaxiDot and Multifunction Stearting Wheel so i have an up-rated battery so I am not too concerned about my battery

Why does Maxi dot and a M/F steering wheel get you an uprated battery?

Don't forget that posts which are 4 1/2 years old might not actually be correct now!!

Usually the uprated battery is fitted to cars with Xenons.
