So my ESP light came on....

Featured Replies

Well after getting my car scraped in a car park over the w/e, I now also have to work out why my ESP light has decided to light up like a Christmas tree (though sadly without any presents underneath).

From what I've read in various places, it seems this ESP problem is something of a known issue for cars in my age bracket (March 2007 Octy vRS TFSI) and it may be that the ESP module is up the swanee and needs replacing...which is a bit of a downer if that is the case as it's going to be ££££££ :(

Obviously I'd like to keep the cost down as much as possible so what I'm wondering is whether it's possible to confirm for certain that it is the ESP module by using VCDS? Or is it not poss to diagnose for sure with VCDS? Or would it be better to just get it into a garage and leave them to do what they do and work out what the issue is? I was just thinking if I could take it to a garage and say "it's definitely the ESP module" then it would save some £££s as they wouldn't have to spend time doing any diagnosis.

I'm trying to get an idea of roughly how much it's going to cost to get this sorted - anyone have any ideas? I wouldn't be able to DIY this (when it comes to car maintenance, I have the practical ability of a lump of mature cheddar) but is this the part that would be required if it is the ESP module that needs replacing:

Yes you can diagnose this with VCDS, you're looking for a G201 Brake Pressure Sender error.

You'll be pleased to know that you can now buy repair kits from VW/Skoda for the pump and you don't need to have it replaced entirely at £1000+. Depending on which pump yours is the repair kit is usually around £160. Some are more expensive but as far as I know, not by much.

Our quote to replace it (depending on the price of the pump, but it's probably the same as above) is £263.48 including VAT.

Big thanks for this!! Very good to know it could be fixed for a lot less than I was fearing!

I'll try and get some VCDS time and see if it is defo a G201 error...

Thanks again :)

Ermmm....thanks....I think! :p

Yeh, I've spent a while trawling through that post and I think it was doing me more harm than good!

The ESP issue is now commonly recognised as a manufacturing defect and has been widely publicised throughout the automotive media.

As a result (based on a case by case criterion) the work is being carried out FOC on cars outside of the manufacturer’s warranty.

A lot depends on who you get on the other end of the phone but also your level of loyalty (Have you owned the car from new? Does it have full Skoda service history? Have you owned other Skoda cars in the past etc?).

A work colleague has a 2.0TDi VW Touran with the G201 error, a plea of poverty down the phone to VW customer services saw the work being approved and completed FOC at his local VW dealership as a gesture of goodwill. It was a 2008 model, was bought outside of the VW network, had 70,000 miles on it and didn't have a full VW history.

Ring Skoda UK on 08457 745745. They will likely insist on a visit to a local Skoda dealer and a diagnostic check (approx. £80) as they'll want to see the fault code for themselves, then depending on how good you are at pretending to cry down the phone will depend on how much of a goodwill gesture they will give you!

Worth a try?
