FL Octy 2.0TDi 2009 pd 140 - sudden loss of radiator fluid

Featured Replies

Hi Guys, looking under bonnet on my 2009 FL 140pd TDI last night I noticed that my radiator fluid level looked slightly lower than usual but the car was nose down on my sloped drive.

Jumped in the car this morning started the car and the low water warning immediately popped up although the car started on the ball and ran without any issue or smoking?

Rolled the car to a level surface and pulled the bonnet to find I was approximately 10mm below the minimum line.

Topped up the resevior to the max line and drove carefully to work some 15 miles away.

On arriving I checked the level again and sure enough the level had dropped again to between the max an min line.

I know that the EGR cooler was replace in January, it has also had a Cam belt a year ago but need to check with the dealer if the water pump was changed at the same time.

Ive also checked the dipstick and oil cap and they are clear of emulsion or water.

Apart from these items are there any common areas that I should be checking?

The car is booked into a VW/Skoda specialist on monday.to check but any advise would be welcome.

Steve

Need to put in more, half the tank (over max line), don´t worry the tank has enough space for the coolent to expand

Had twice fill with some, this happened until 20000km.

The garage should do a pressure test for you, which will tell if the system is leaking. They can also put a tracer in the water which will show where it is leaking from.

Its booked in with a recomended VW specialist in the morning who have said exactly that!

I did call the dealer who has serviced the car from new and checking through the history it looks like the previous company owner declined a water pump change when the cambelt was replaced...sounds like £30 well save by him!

Ill keep you posted!

pressure test carried out and lower thermostat pipe-to-radiator had split; looks like the good mechanics at the Winchester Motor Company have previously broken the pipe clip which has allowed the pipe to rub and chafe and wear through!

pipe changed and rad fluid replaced but I have now noticed that my heating in the car doesnt work as well as i did before? if left on 22 C the air would blow luke warm (what you would expect at 22C) now its much cooler...on full temp it blows out hot!

Is this just me or is there a calibration required?

If you've got full climate it will blow out what it thinks is needed to make the car sit at 22 degrees.

So if it's 25 outside, then it will blow cold air.

Otherwise, have a look for trapped air and get the garage to bleed any air out of the system.
