MK1 FOGS

Featured Replies

Hi guyss, recently picked up some fogs for my fabia (which didnt come with any) but i dont have the loom for them, nor is it hiding behind my bumper, ive already picked up a light control unit which has the correct fog selections to replace mine when i fit it, how would i go about wiring them??

I have this in the works myself, although I'm lazy and haven't done the hard bit yet. Just fixed the fogs to look pretty, lol.

Shopping list:

Skoda or any VAG dealer, part numbers

000979009 - "repair wire" to connect to dash panel to illuminate warning light.

000979225 - "repair wire" to tap power from the new front fog enabled switch.

000979227 - "repair wire" to install fuse into fusebox. You could use an in-line fuse instead, but it may rattle behind the dash, or be difficult to access if the fuse blows. If you purchase a different fuse holder, ensure it is capable of handling at least 15 amps, preferably more.

The above should cost no more than a couple of quid each.

You will also need a good sizeable length of wire, 1.5mm sq or thicker, suitable for 15amps or more. It has to go from the switch, to the fusebox, back across behind the dash to under the glovebox, and to the front of each side of the car, then to an earth location. I would suggest getting hold of 10m

15 amp fuse. A larger type for the fusebox, or one for whatever holder you have.

You will also need in addition to a soldering iron and some flux cored solder, heatshrink. http://www.toolstation.com/shop/Electrical/Cable+Management/Heat+Shrink+115m+x+32mm/d190/sd2460/p89992 should do the job. You could use insulating tape instead, but heatshrink is far superior.

In addition I would recommend some split convoluted conduit tubing, to ensure the wires do not rub in the engine bay, but probably not strictly necessary. E.g. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/6-5MM-SPLIT-CONVOLUTED-CONDUIT-SLEEVE-TUBE-CABLE-WIRE-HARNESS-2-METRES-2M-/250959331004?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3a6e577ebc

To connect the fog lights themselves either a plug for one from a scrappie, or two female spade connectors. Not 100% certain but think you need 2.8mm ones, able to accommodate the thickness of the wire used. E.g. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RED-2-8mm-FEMALE-SPADE-PUSH-ON-CRIMP-TERMINALS-QTY-50-/200479134463?pt=UK_BOI_Electrical_Components_Supplies_ET&hash=item2ead7cd2ff

The other thing you will need is something to connect to a ground location. I would suggest use of one of http://www.toolstation.com/shop/Electrical/Crimp+Terminals/Copper+Tube+Crimp+Lugs+6sq+mm+Entry+8mm+hole/d190/sd2712/p55534 in conjunction with an M8 bolt (NOT stainless steel), and an M8 washer.

Have already described much of the process above. If you are unfamiliar with the process of soldering, suggest reading websites on how to do it. Any bits you solder, make sure they are well insulated with heatshrink.

Before messing with any of the electrics, disconnect the battery negative terminal and keep it well away from the battery.

Remove the lower dash under the steering wheel. This uses torx screws in numerous places. See http://www.fabia-vrs.com/technical-info/cruise-control-retrofit/ for a description on how to remove. Suggest also removing the glovebox to make it easier to get at the hole to pass wire through to engine bay.

You will use one half of 000979225. Push the end into the unused hole on the plug, which I believe should be a pin marked "NL", which is on the bottom second from the left. You may need to somehow slide, or remove a purple tab/retainer, then you push the wire in from the back, it should click, and the tab is then replaced.

Then this needs to carry over to the fuse box using 000979227, or a fuse holder. I can't precisely recall how the fusebox is removed. ISTR there's a screw and the thing hinges out, and again you need to remove a purple tab to enable pushing the wire in. All the wires come out in a big bunch, which I think is cable tied to the box.

After the 15 amp fuse, your wire now needs to go across the bottom of the dash, tuck it away safely/cable tie. You are going to push it through to the engine bay using the hole under the glovebox. But first take a spur off the wire and connect to half of 000979009. From what I have read, it is possible this connector is already in the plug, but you have it just in case. You need to remove the instrument panel. To do this I believe you simply undo the two screws at the bottom, and wriggle it out. You are going to open the 32 pin connector to the back of the dash, and insert the connector to pin 19.

The hole you need to pass the wire through is the one also in the cruise control link, where the washer pipe passes through. Then you need to take it to the light units, ensuring it is kept away from hot/moving parts. Cable tie it or push it into the existing split convoluted conduit the car's loom uses. Then obviously hook up to the fog light units.

For your earth, you could probably get away with using one of the empty bolt holes on the bit of metal in front of the coolant tank.
