Throttle body clean question

Featured Replies

Hi all I've just cleaned my throttle body as per the guide on the forum (1.8t) and Jesus did it need doing...the cars only done 58,000 so I almost didn't bother. Glad I did now and great guide. Quick question though to those in the know should the throttle valve be completely shut when off the throttle as I noticed before I started that mine sits slightly open...I'm talking maybe a mm if that? Is the normal thanks? :-)

Should be a small opening at closed position.

Yep normal. If it was totally shut and sealed then the engine wouldn't work whenever your foot wasn't on the throttle!

Thank god for that lol. Just been out for a quick test drive and unless I'm fooling myself the throttle response is better. I'm shocked how dirty it was after only 58k.

Thanks for the quick answers, I dont mind following guides but know little about these cars.

Our Bosch throttle bodies are known for being rubbish!

I spent a couple of days at Pierburg's throttle body manufacturing plant in Berlin at the end of last year. Their automated assembly line is epic!

Anyway, I was discussing the Audi 1.8 20vT engine with them. As soon as I mentioned that I have to clean my TB they laughed! A well known issue apparently. They recommended that I make a simple rig, applying a voltage to a couple of pins to open the valve when on a bench. But warned me to be very careful when cleaning the butterfly valve itself.

I'm sure the modern Bosch stuff is much better. Actually, I wonder if Bosch revised the TB on my car. Better check the part numbers... (not that I could afford a new one anyway!)

Can you post a link to the guide please.
