vrs/elegance 1.8t suspension: interchangeable or not?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

can anyone say for sure if the shocks & springs from a mk1 vrs would go straight into an Elegance 1.8t without issue?

If so, how much would it lower it by, approx?

and I'm taking the fact that it would stiffen things up as a given.....

thanks in advance :-)

Nope front shocks have the mountings for the arb while the elegance has it on the wishbones. You'll be better off saving money and buying coil overs which are cheaper than buying them for the Vrs

It should do.

Springs are 15mm lower.

The vRS has a front ARB that as far as I know isn't present on other models.

The ARB mounts are additional though. Surely you can use the shocks and use the standard Elegance ARB?

Bottom one is a standard vRS shock:

Id be worried about the arb not being up to the job, should be easy getting a second hand Vrs front arb and drop links and fitting that too. Don't forget about bump stops and mounts

ta for the replies, tbh I'm not too much the wiser though....my Elegance has a 21mm arb.

Just wondering if anyone's stiffened up their Elegance by straight swapping the VRS springs/shocks.

and if that's not so straightforward, what did they do to stiffen it up, links would be great :-)

What I've seen is this lot, for £50;

Its got all you need and will fit but I would fit the Vrs front arb aswell just so its 100% Vrs spec

thanks again Guys, so just trying to get this straight in my head.....

those bits would fit,but it may be the case I'd be best off with the vrs arb (what, & removing my one?)

or... I could fit those bits, straight swap, & keep my existing arb?.

I'd go for the second option...surely if you get coilovers for an Elegance you wouldn't need to change the arb too, so what's the point changing it if you swap for vrs bits? If it's just to keep it vrs spec, that doesn't bother me, I don't want it super quick through the bends or exactly like a vrs, just firmer sprung. That being the case, are we agreed a straight swap would fit, be firmer sprung, safe & MOT worthy!?

cheers

Your handling will be up to Vrs spec and less roll though the corners, why do you think the Vrs arb is totally different in the first place?

Also you'll be best off adding a rear arb into the equation that totally transforms the handling

Hi Raf_,

thanks for the help,I understand what you're saying, but as above, I don't need it to be up to VRs handling spec, just a bit firmer than it is, it's very comfotable but bargy, so what I'm after is something inbetween the standard Elegance & the VRs, so with that in mind, would what Im proposing be ok.

I could always upgrade further to what you're suggesting if needs be couldn't I, if I wanted it exactly like a Vrs

everyone seems to have different ideas about this, i thought any mkiv platform fwd suspension was interchangeable (different spring rates etc. i know, but fitment wise). i may be wrong as i was advised that my vogtland set up from my a3 wouldnt go on my vrs. im not convinced tbh. ive seen that vrs suspension on ebay and its worth a punt with the mileage matey is claiming for the price. my bet says it goes on and does what your after i.e firms up your car without be identical to vrs handling. (may be wrong!)

The Vrs stuff will physically fit all but the 4x4 mk4 variants. But due to the arb mountings the reverse isn't true

it will physically fit, but the a3 has arb mounts on the wishbones, if your coilovers have the mounts on the strut body (as many do) then it will fit....

but the the issue is the a3 is a different car to the octavia, and is weighted differently, i personally wouldn't fit a3/golf/tt/leon suspension to an octavia.
