SD Card reader

Featured Replies

Got a brand fire new Golf Match for a loan car atm while mine is busy been broken. The Golf is a Match and it comes with some pretty nice extra's for what i thought was bottom of the range.

One of which i have to have in the Octy, SD Card reader, i normally use my AUX port and ipod for music but this is so much easier! How is this done please? Do i have to buy the whole head unit?

I think the card reader is on the side of the Head unit.

SD card reader is standard on Bolero and Columbus head units. If you want this feature on a pre-FL car then I guess you'd need to purchase a Bolero stereo.

...or a replacement, third-party head unit.

Wouldn't a double-DIN Kenwood/Alpine/etc for around £150-£200 be a better value way of replacing the head unit? I'm currently considering this as I'm not impressed with the "Stream MP3" (and I miss a USB socket - I thought I'd stopped burning MP3s to CD about 6 years ago).

Sounds like this headunit, which is very similar if not the same as the Bolero, as GroundHog suggests.

I have this in the Superb and it is great, currently running a 16GB card but some on here have run 32GB cards with no issues. For the OEM look, then a Bolero would do the job otherwise you'd need to go aftermarket as per Keith's recommendation.

The Bolero and SD card reader was the main reason I didn't spec the MDI interface option - the unit offers 6 disc changer plus SD card slot, no reason to connect my iPod.

But when I tried one out in a Superb, it was such a pain in getting random to work, having the unit read all the tracks on the card etc. A good USB or Bluetooth connection to an iPod is the way to go if you are looking to change.

Amundsen also has SD card slot and works very well.

Agreed, same issue here but if you put a track in the root folder then it will seek random from the entire card. Without that, it will merely do random from the folder current playing. I found that out on here!

I have the Amundsen+ and all my music on a very cheap 32GByte SD card (the biggest it will read). Only the head unit GUI is clunky to say the least - and I really don't like the display graphics or colour and wish I could change them.

So far I've not bothered to plug in an iPod even though I've got the cable and everything is ready for it. I also have a USB cable for the MDI interface (£5 eBay) but only used that once (limited to same GUI again).

Best thing about it is playback of music direct from iPhone 4 via bluetooth which puts the iPhone in control and no wires :-)

Advice to OP is to go aftermarket.

My bolero is sat in the box Eoin sent my Columbus in. Now lives under my bed.

Emma, you might want to know that many on this forum, me included, have found the performance of the SD card reader in the Bolero - especially with reasonably full, large capacity (16GB/32GB) cards - to be very slow. It takes an age to read in the contents of the card, which it will do, every time you switch on. There are numerous threads on this with suggested workarounds, such as very specific music folder structuring, but none work that well in my opinion.

If I had my time again, I would have specified the MDI option and connected it to a USB HDD containing all my music in the glovebox, plus it can be used with my iPhone. That's the setup I have in my new VW Polo and it works well.

Or you could use a 4Gb card like me and regularly change the content or use more than one card.

Doesn't it use the same system as the Golf? They look identical. I used my 32GB in the Golf and it worked fine, tbh worked alot faster then a CD!

Does anyone know of any for sale or what price i should be looking at? I dont want to go after market, loving the OEM look :)

Make sure it is an up to date one as the older ones were slow to read cards.

My one is spot on and instant.. I have only tried a 16gig card but filled it to the brim and it was still instant.

So would this is be case of plug in a play or do i need anything else to go with? And im guessing it just a straight swop from my unit to that (size wise)

And phone, that will need an extra cable or two? im guessing its the blue tooth

Just bought an unused 2011 Blaupunkt made Bolero with instruction manual and code for £160, just as a measure of how much they are. Pink Panther sold his Delphi one for about the same a few days ago.

Seems it all depends as to what year car/CAN model revision you have as to what will and won't work by the looks of it. Been told by those in the know that this Blaupunkt one in my '58 plate should be a relatively straight swap.

Happy days.

I wonder if there is a firmware update for the older Boleros? Mine is Sep 2010 and has yet to go in for its first service, so I'm wondering if this might get picked up at that point, due in about 3 months.

Bluetooth is not built in to the bolero that's another unit at 200 ish (hands free kit)

What..???

Sept 2010 and no service yet..!!

My one is OCT 2010.

Card reader is fast as could be.

Firmware has been discussed here a few times. I dont know what the outcome was.

23k kms on the clock and has been serviced twice.

Why have you not got your one serviced yet

It's on variable servicing, with long-life oil. Depending on the numbers of kms covered and driving style, the car "figures out" when it needs a service, with a maximum service interval being 2 years. Looking at what my car is showing on the dash right now, it looks like it will be due for its first service smack on the 2 year point, in Oct 2012.

Curiously, here in NZ at least, Volkswagens, sold with the same engine/gearbox, by the same dealer, don't offer the variable servicing option.

My car was set for 30k kms service but I was having none of that.

12 months service intervals for me as I do small mileage.

First service was done at 15k, second one was done at 22k.

Not taking any chances

In my experience - my last three HU's have had SD & USB (Chinese WinCE, Bolero & currently a Pioneer AVIC f940bt) - Music on an SD card is MILES better than USB. Much, much quicker.

Most aftermarket headunits will come will a whole host of connection options, including sd card. A touchscreen makes a huge difference for navigating your folders though.

(FWIW, the Bolero is a cracking little unit if you can live without built-in sat-nav)

I am loving the sound quality from the Bolero.

When you say the SD card is quicker than USB.

I wonder would it also be quicker than the MDI conection as I am thinking of adding this to my next car. Must order next week.

Antenna plug would need to be a double not sure if yours already is if not just a wee adaptor to solve.
