Radiator fan(s)

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

having read numerous posts regarding air-con/fans/resistor packs etc, I've came to the conclusion that I have a fan issue. I went to do the test with the engine off, ignition on, air-con on to check if the smaller fan was running only to find there isn't one. My fan only seems to come on at the highest speed with a/c on when car is stationary.

So, should I have one fan or two? My car is a 2006 1.9 TDi PD100 AXR engine code with air-con.

Here is what my radiator/fan looks like:

The resister pack is for the air blower in the cabin and is unrelated to the radiator fan.

I've seen these with both one fan and two fans depending on the year.

There are two fuses for the fan on the battery (one for the 1st stage, the other for the 2nd stage). If the 1st stage never runs and the fuse is intact, then it could be the fan, fan controller or thermal switch on the radiator.

Cool. Cheers, was beginning to worry that something dodgy was going on as I was expecting two fans.

Yeah, checked the fuse, it's intact. Meant to say that I suspect fan controller but I'm planning on getting it on vagcom for a diagnosis.

If you pull the three pin connector off the radiator thermo switch, you can test that you have power, the fan controller relays are OK and the fan itself is OK.

With ignition on...

Short pin 1 (brown) and pin 2 (brown/blue) to test the fan low speed.

Short pin 1 (brown) and pin 3 (brown/green) to test the fan high speed.

Very helpful. Cheers for that.

Will get a look this weekend.....if the rain lets up! I'm getting too old to go messing about with cars in the wet.

Hey mate, did you ever manage to get this solved? I've just been to get my ac sorted and they discovered the fan was non functional! I had noticed it didn't kick in at all when the engine got hot but as it never actually over heated I assumed this was just normal. I've hooked the fan directly to the battery and it spins as it should. I'm going to test the above procedure as it was suggested by another briskodian. But just interested if you got to the bottom of it as my problem seems exactly the same.

I haven't got to the bottom of it i'm afraid. However, my a/c actually works. I'm pretty sure it's the fan controller that is defective on mine. Just haven't got round to doing anything about it.

Do you get the hissing noise inside the cabin?

What I've figured out is that my fan (singular) doesn't turn at low speed when the a/c is switched on. Therefore this causes the compressor to overheat building pressure which causes the hissing noise. So, what I do at the moment is only switch the a/c on above 30mph. I then turn it off if I stop at junctions, roundabouts etc. Above 30mph enough air is passing through the front of the car to let the system work normally.

Probably of no use to you, but it's where I'm at just now.

Hi,

I own a Fabia PD TDI 1.4 2008 model. Recently the radiator fan is not working at the low speed. Due to which the aircon is not cooling the cabin effectively. A thin fuse in the battery has gone. I changed my fan 3 months back. Im worried that I'm might end up spending again.

Can anyone please guide me what would have gone wrong?

Thanks.
