Octavia VRS pd 170 hunting on idle

Featured Replies

Hi all i've recently purchased an octavia vrs tdi 170, every now and then it keeps hunting on idle like it its miss firing. I rang Skoda uk and apparently its had the injector recall carried out. I'm currently trying some fuel system cleaner. Other possibilities i thought may be;

MAF

EGR blocked/dirty

Coolant temp sensor - even though its looks like someone has done this as the wiring looked to of been re-taped when i bought it and coolant looks a bit weak.

Faulty injector even though they are new

Injector timing setting outs

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Chris.

How does it drive, sounds nothing common anyway , check fuel filter too!

Drives absolutely fine

Mine did this but it is a TSI, It was a sensor in the inlet manifold, got it replaced and it stopped. Showed on a scan and eventually lit up the warning light on the dash although only for a while.

Ok cool I'm trying to see if my friend will scan it today or this weekend to see what it flags up.

It basically sounds like this

no smoke at all though and so far only done it once warm.

Mine is a TSI and dose that and it show nothing on tester

Try a new fuel filter and a dose of Millers diesel additive.

Could have been just doing a regen ether.

Could have been just doing a regen ether.

What does the car feel like to drive whilst carrying out a regen? My rev's don't move though. Also whilst driving today seemed to miss slightly around 2000rpm. Doing my head in now was fine driving to my destination about half an hour way and then was doing it on the way back. Fuel filter might be my first job, got a full bottle of Comma D-tox in it at the moment to see what it does.

Post a video of it.

Just put my TSI in for diagnosis because of the same issue. Have had issues since delivery, but in the last two weeks these have become very frequent and repetitive:

- Hunting (will go anywhere from 600 to 1400 rpm on its own)

- Hesitation / surging - will not respond to throttle input, does so with a delay, or throttle response does not correspond to amount of input

- EPC light comes on "Engine fault, workshop!" on maxidot, but frequently goes off after switching ignition on/off

- Complete loss of power - three times it's happened now - car will not increase revs with throttle input, but will keep existing revs. Lifting the pedal obviously decreases revs and eventually stalls (on neutral or clutch depressed)

- Sometimes EPC light won't come on, so nothing on diags.

Car's just 1.5 months after warranty expired, always served at Skoda. Lots of history re. this issue, never satisfactorily fixed. Think I'm looking at a £50 charge for diag alone, and hope the dealer will stick it out for me and help me get this under warranty, given the previous, unsatisfactory, repair attempts.

Given the other posts re. TSI, this seems like a common vRS issue (possibly other models?) irrespective of fuel type - any ideas apart from inlet manifold sensor?

Welcome to the world of the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter).

My PD170 turns lumpy when performing a regen which for me is every other day.

I'd say regen

Welcome to the world of the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter).

My PD170 turns lumpy when performing a regen which for me is every other day.

Mine does this occasionally. Having bought the VRS to replace a car with a non-diagnosed misfire (I've tried almost everything!), I just couldn't believe it. However, drives normally otherwise and previous owner says it's always done it, so clearly the DPF.

My answer - it's coming out next week!

Sorry to resurect an old thred but I've just got an 08 plate VRS 170 and mine is doing the same. It drives perfectly but when idling it feels a rough idle, does everyone think it's the DPF and is it best to take it out?

Thanks,

Have you checked the glow plugs?

Thanks for the reply, however aren't the glow plugs just for start up? Wouldn't explain while it idles rough. Although I suppose the two problem could be separate.

After start up they do continue to stay on until there is sufficient heat in each cylinder. If they arent working correctly it will cause a lumpy idle until the engine is warm.
