'Thrumming' - Wheel bearing?

Featured Replies

Picked up a 1.9SE a few weeks back and pretty please with it so far apart from a whiring/thrumming (if that's even a word).

It seems to be coming from the offside rear, could it be wheel bearing? Noise ocurs in/out of gear and is consistent over changes in surface.

Cheers

I presume you mean it's varying with the road speed. If so, the most likely suspects are a stone trapped under the dust shield and a worn wheel bearing.

The trapped stone might cost you for new discs and pads, but is "one of those things". A bearing might be covered by warranty.

If it's not a wheel bearing, check if it's a different tire to the other side or if the tread is lower on the affected side.

The Toyos i used to have started to make a droning noise as the tread got down towards the wear marker. They sounded awful, but all was quiet once new ones were fitted. Cheaper budget tires can also be more noisy, so even if its a nearly new, but a "budget" brand it could also be this.

Inner edge tyre wear?

  • Author

Thought it might be tyres as they are dieyoung/nangkang or similar brand.

They are near end of life so will probably see if it remains after replacing, There looks to be no play in wheel and it's only done 30k miles. I assume there would be some scoring on the disc if it is a stone?

Inner edge tyre wear?

What he said. Rear alignment will be out and it'll have chewed the inner edge(s) of the rear tyre(s).

Mine ended up being uneven wear in the tyres causing this noise. So much better now it has gone! Sounded like a wheel bearing at the time.

I had this . I called it "figure of eight "wear on both rear tyres. Looking at tyre face on, inner edge wear at 12 oclock ,outer edge wear 6 oclock .

Infact one of mine had wear -inner outer inner outer at 12,3,6 and 9 oclock. Whole car shook. Cured by fitting Michelins.

Mine was a flat spot on the inner edge of the rear tyre.

cured with Michelin energy savers

Another 1 for alignment , mine had it and was noisy , started to wear inner edges , had it to Align my car specialist and its gone .
