Final Straw Fabia 2001 1.4MPI 8V

Featured Replies

Okay, So after buying a new alternator to fix the flickering lights in my car it didnt fix the flickering lights :( So i did some DIY myself and unplugged the Steering Sensory from behind the front grill. Hey presto no flickering lights. But now, (not sure if this is a coincidence) but if the car is left for 2 days in the garage I come to the 3rd day & there's not enough charge left in the battery to charge it.

I've had the alterntaor tested outputing 14.1v which is fine. The auto electrician checked my car for any drainage and there was non. No lights left on zip, so what could be causing the battery to drain after 2 days?

Thanks

Probably the root cause of the flickering lights in the first place...

...A bad earth connection.

Have previously read the earth cable between the battery itself and car can be a weak link.

With your symptoms I wouldn't discount the battery itself. The only way to tell if a battery has had it is a drain test. If it's old, just buy a new one.

Thanks for your replies. The thing is I should have mentioned, the battery is only 6 months old and at the same time i also bought a new earth cable from Skoda.

Clean the earth connections (connection cleaner) and make sure they're tight.

The way to check for battery drain is to disconnect the earth, and put the multimeter in series (one probe on the battery and one on the earth).

The battery could still be faulty/inadequate for the car itself. The MPI is fitted as standard with a 063 battery, which IMO is a bit weak for a car with all the electronics it has, particularly if it is a cheap/poor quality battery. If you buy a cheap battery which happened to be old stock, or stored incorrectly, 6 months life might not be unexpected. I wouldn't discount the battery itself.

Is the alternator definitely charging the battery? What happens to the voltage with fans on full, rear demister, all the lights on etc?

I had the same issue, i found corrosion (green oxide on the copper) and no matter how much cleaner i used it persisted, i just replaced it and it fixed the issue, now however i found that at low revs my PAS is heavy, but at high revs the PAS is light, i think the Alternator is on its way out. :(
