Fitting Amp And Sub

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm a beginner to this sort of thing so dont go all technical on me! :D

I've got a 12" sub and an amp to fit. I've been given a wiring kit and my mate has said its a piece of cake to fit them although I'm not convinced. I don't want any holes being drilled....

Which side of the car is best to run the wires along? How do I get the wires through to the back of the head unit and to the battery?

Anyone got any pics?

Thankyou

There is a guide on here how to do it.

Oooh, my god, this is getting in the way of me drinking my can of Carling. :dtp:

BUT, IMO. best side of the car = passenger side.

Best way to battery IMO, is behind glovebox through existing grommet already there for rear wash pipe. I had to drill another hole as 4awg wouldn't fit. Then remove HU, and run RCA feed from the output/s (more than one?) and follow the power wire. Make aure RCA feed has a remote signal wire on it too. (essential for amp)

In boot, secure amp in desired position (and sub for that matter) wire up earth from amplifier to good earth (could use rear cluster fitting, or seat belt/seat "T" mounts. Then wire up power. Finally hook up subwoofer +/- to the am,plifier, in bridged mode for maximum power if possible (if a 2 channel amp)

Then final job is wire in remote feed to the remote feed on amp, then the amp will switch on and off in time with the head unit. Then hopefully happy listening.

Don't hesitate to ask any other Qs - I'll try my best to help. :)

If you follow the upper grommet route no drilling required and looks neat and tidy. 4AWG not a problem.

Trouble is I never managed to find out about it before my install, and if you pardon the expression, once I got my power tool in my hand, there was no stopping me drilling. :D

Thanks for the replies guys.

Whats the upper grommet route??

I have a 4 channel amp if that makes any difference. I thought I'd get a 4 channel for when I upgrade speakers eventually. Will this change anything?

Make sure you use decent quality shielded line cables (cheapest way is to get shielded cable from Maplins and make you own exactly to length with quality brass plugs). It is also preferable to run the line cables down the other side of the car to the power cable.

Make sure you fuse the power cable as close to the battery as possible.

Run the amplifier earth cable to any convenient exposed bit of metal as close to the amp as possible - seat belt mounts are a common option.

Use decent power cable even if its a cheap amp (again Maplins is a good bet) and decent fuses (those gold plated ones in clear perspex are ok). Also use decent speaker wire (although mains cable is fine).

As the voltage in the car is so low (12v) the current is very high, which is why it needs thick cables.

Agreed, especially with running RCA's down other side, dont want to pick up noise!!!

You want to keep the rca's as far away from anything as possible... with my car I ran the power cable down the passenger side with the passenger side speaker wire... driver's side just had the speaker wires for that side, and then the rca's, and cd changer cable were run down the transmission hump... was great fun stripping all that interior out!! less fun putting it back in tho!! (still got bits left over!)

I have just fitted an amp and sub base in my fabia the best route is the upper gromit on the passenger side (not the ones with wires going through that just goes behinfd the wheel arch) which on a black car was a bit difficult to find but it goes straight into the car and you can then fit the cable throgh it. On looking at the fabia I get the impression they expected you to fit cables and things in it as i have found holes in carpet (under the seat) and a hole in the glove box where i fitted the changer. Once I discovered the upper gromit and using a wire hanger it wasn't too bad. However, many thanks to Doer1 for the pics and the e-mail it was a great help.

afaik rca is just another name for a phono connector. Like the leads that connect your hifi componants together.

Excellent, anyone have a guide to running a power cable in a octy vrs ?
