Which FAKRA connector?!

Featured Replies

Get the double connector and plug the white aerial cable into the one nearest the centre of the head unit and the brown one into the other one.

Simples.

White on the right...

That's what I thought; it's basically the reverse of how it plugs into the Audience. How bizarre!

Okay, had an issue today where I realised I wasn't receiving AM stations, so just to clarify this, if you're sticking one of these in your motor, try the connections in BOTH sockets ad work it out from there. Much easier than trying to think about which goes where and it doesn't look like it actually does any harm.

Basically, whichever side you stick the FM aerial in it will work regardless, BUT the AM side only works in one socket. All fixed, just a bummer having to undo it all to get to the back of the stereo. :)

It won't do any harm - I tried both in mine which is how I developed 'the knowledge' about this!

If you read post #24 above you will see that what you have discovered was already written...

If you have both aerial cables plugged in to the adapter (third picture first post) you should have FM/AM/TMC available all the time. Am I correct in reading between the lines and saying that you don't have both aerials plugged in yet (the brown one and the white one) and that you are just using the white one?

Correct me if I'm wrong but if you have plugged into the one that provides AM does that not mean you can't get TMC? I thought that was the point of getting the splitter so you can have AM and TMC?

No, I DID have both aerials plugged in, just the wrong sockets so needed to swap them over. When I fitted it all, I checked I had FM but must have forgotten to check the AM signal.

Both connectors are plugged in, just noting that either will give FM, but only one will do AM.

Just reiterating this as I understand KB said which goes right & left, but if you don't have the stereo to hand (as was the case with mine cos i'd packed it away before fitting this one) or can't be bothered to fanny about looking or checking, it's very hard to tell which one is white/brown or left/right as the connectors themself are almost identical and you need to know which went where in the factory stereo. Without the stereo, the only was to distinguish is by already knowing which connector notch goes in which side, so thought i'd make it easy for anyone else doing this by just saying as long as you get the AM side right, the FM side will sort itself out. :)

And re anddenton, without taking it out again and seeing if the AM aerial sends some sort of FM signal, I wouldn't know. All I know is that AM is definitely one specific side. Will pop the top cubby hole out later and see if the AM signal ALSO does FM to back that up. Way I left it, I can access the join of the connectors from the top above the stereo. :)

The way I understand it (From my Columbus retrofit anyway) is one connector does FM+TMC and the other does AM+FM backup. This meant when I fitted my Columbus I had FM and TMC but no AM and when I went through a tunnel and lost signal the unit would try the FM backup before deciding no signal was being received and would then stay on FM backup meaning when I came out of the tunnel I would have to reselect the station in order for the stereo to recheck its inputs for a signal and switch back to the FM main. Now I have fitted a Fakra splitter and everything works perfectly.

KB says there's no TMC on the Bolero so no point in me fiddling with it. What does TMC stand for and what does it do anyway?

Traffic Message Channel (TMC) is a technology for delivering traffic and travel information to drivers. It is typically digitally coded using the FM-RDS system on conventional FM radio broadcasts. It can also be transmitted on DAB or satellite radio. It allows silent delivery of dynamic information suitable for reproduction or display in the language chosen by the user and without interrupting normal audio broadcast services. Services, both public and commercial, are now operational in many countries worldwide. When data is integrated directly into a navigation system, traffic information can be used in the system's route calculation and the driver can have the option to take alternative routes to avoid traffic incidents.

I now see why the Columbus would have this and the Bolero doesn't

Ah, thought it might have something to do with satnav. :)

Interesting and coincidental topic. My Colubus was stolen and they took the white Fakra block (double B) and left the 2 tiny plugs terminated on the coaxs. Anyone know if those tiny plugs snap into a Fakra housing?

The thieves removed the cables from the double connector and not the connector from the Columbus? Or just cut the cables?

Seems odd to me, but they do just clip into a new connector block.
