My Octavia VRS CR 170 ECU & DSG Remap Experience

Featured Replies

I Purchased my 2010 Skoda Octavia VRS CR DSG Earlier this year and i was really happy with it. Here is a link to my ongoing project thread http://www.briskoda....-vrs-cr-dsg-fl/

Recently My car had developed what felt like a drop in power at the lower end of the revs almost as if the turbo was delayed in spooling up for a second before giving power. Pulling away was especially difficult because you would have to push the accelerator pedal a lot further leading to the car boosting more than you want....Iit was almost like the DSG boc was slipping its clutch.

As my car was under warranty I visited two local delaers for diagnostic work and they found nothing wrong. It was basically a case of "computer said no".

I came from a Highly Modified MK2 Focus RS (see below pic) so I wasnt sure if it was just me getting used to the slightly Lazy DSG delivery at lower revs.....However even my wife had commented that the Skoda feels different to when we purchased it.

NOW THE "SHARK TALE" BEGINS

A couple of forum members suggested I try Ben at Shark Performance as his Diagnostic skills are second to none. I messaged Ben via the forum and after getting his reply was confident he would have a look. I then phoned Shark and asked checkily if they could fit me in the next day. The answer was YES they could squeeze me in

So I arrived at Shark the following day and Ben immediatly took the car out and data logged it. Ben ruled out a Boost Leak after checking the data. No Other faults were logged.

Ben Suggested a DSG Software Re-map as the DSG software as standard can be a bit lazy. So I agreed to have this done

I Had been thinking of getting a Stage 1 Remap as well so asked Ben to do both at the same time. I waited while the guys worked there magic and a couple of hours later the car was ready to drive home.

The DSG Map was noticeable from the outset and has almost cured the slightly laggy throttle pick up. The gear changes seem much better timed as well.....Previously it would try and shift into 5th way to early and struggle when you need to accelerate. Now with the remap the box holds 4th gear and feels much more lively.

The remap is DEFINATELY a revelation....The power delivery is as smooth as standard but much more meaty. The best complement I can give is that It almost feels like I have driven out with a 3.0 CR engine in place of the 2.0 unit. Power delivery feels more potent all through the revs, Overtaking is so much quicker and from 50-70mph I dont think its much slower then the RS was standard,

If anyone is planning a remap or any other engine work i'd highly recommend going to Shark

Another point to note is that on the Journey up to Shark I acheived an Average of 52.3mpg and on the way home AFTER THE MAP got 60.1mpg. The journey was 99% motorway crusing speeds around 70mph with luckily no traffic.

I had to change the RS becuase of the running costs and terrible fuel economy so the Skoda being nearly as much fun and returning 60mpg is AMAZING...Because the RS held its money so well I was able to get myself something for the weekend (2.0 Zetec Westfield on Throttle Bodies).....

If you are a Freedom member I think Shark give a discount. If you PM Ben he'll be able to give you a quote for both. To be honest if you are going to have the ECU Remap done the DSG Software map is fairly reasonable price wise so id have that done as well to complement it.

Ben said you can do one and then the other at a later stage but as I live in Essex the 2 1/2 hrs drive made it worth while me having both at the same time.

Best Regards

Neil

Cheers
