Cherished Transfers....

Featured Replies

...are a pain in the feckin @rse. According to the dealer you can't do them at a local DVLA anymore so the dealers are sorting it. It's been 2 weeks waiting so far and we just want to get the car. Sometimes wonder if it's worth bothering.

Rant ends.

Bugger, I didn't bother looking into it til now and took their word for it. Should have just stuck it on retention.

Sorry that link was not working, do not know why,

dvla cherised transfers

Onto a used isn't so much of a problem coz the accepting vehicle has already been registered.

Trying to put a cherished plate on an unregistered (new) vehicle is more complicated, but I don't understand why.

Only 1 transaction and not 2 ?

When our dealer did it for our last new car in 2010 we had to wait an extra 2 weeks for the car, mainly because DVLA need chassis numbers and other details which are not available till the dealer actually has the car on their premises.

Go figure, in this technological age!

You can do it at a local office, they are telling porkie pies.

Never had a problem putting on a new car either.

Always took it off the old car a few weeks before, to give enough time for the V5c to come back and then handed the Certificate of Entitlement to the dealer the day before collection.

Then collected the car on the day planned with the cherished reg number as it's original one.

Sounds like a plan for next time.

I've never had a problem with dealers doing it until now although it sounds like DVLA is the problem. The Lupo has got one on too, Quicks in Lincoln sorted that in a couple of days and that was in February.

We have endless problems with cherished transfers at work especially when new regs are coming out.

Most people just leave it to dealers to sort it out rather than doing it themselves

Devils advocate time....

When you but a new car you have to pay a fee to have it registered with DVLA.

Whether that registration is plucked from the general pile or is a personal plate should make no difference.

Same process, no?

Do you work for Harratts Volvo?

I think the dealer's telling porkies here. Of course the DVLA need VINs - but they need those whatever the registration number being used. The dealer gets the VIN as soon as the car is consigned to them; it's all part of the information they need to register a car normally through the Automated First Registration system.

I don't know how we managed it but when we traded in my wife's car for her current Focus, the dealer let us take the V5 away. Went to the DVLA and did a transfer for £80.
