Vibration after pothole

Featured Replies

A few weeks ago I hit a substantial pot hole at around 50mph. After that point the car felt different to drive, quite twitchy and a vibration that could be felt at around 75+ mph.

I took the car into my local Skoda dealer (Sinclair Swansea who are excellent) who were unable to test for the vibration as it occured above 70 but did do a full geometry check for me which identified a rear camber issue. Also had all the wheel balancing checked.

After having the geo adjusted the car feels so much better to drive again but the vibration is still there, strangely it appears to be slightly worse under acceleration. I'm leaning towards a damaged wheel or tyre but am at a loss on how to proceed? Any ideas?

A damaged wheel/tyre should show on a balance check, I'd look elsewhere.

Replace suspect wheel with the full size spare (if you have one) and take it for a drive. If not replace front to back on same side. If fault persists try the other wheels in turn.

Did you check balance on the rear wheel as well as front?

sounds like a bucked or off balance wheel, switch it for the one on the other side and see if the vibration moves!

Could it be a bent drive shaft?

I thought this to be the case as well but only if the operator knew what they were looking for perhaps? So have they tried to balance out a fault for instance...

Will give that a try :)

Yup, all wheels checked.

Hope not :o Althought at this point I'll just be glad to get it diagnosed and rectified as its spoiling my enjoyment of an otherwise excellent car.

BTW its a FL vRS, are the Neptunes prone to being damaged easily?

No it's only really the limited edition multi-spoke alloys that are renowned for buckling if the wind blows in the wrong direction.

Not always. As daz_pd has already suggested, swap the wheels and see if the problem moves. I've seen quite a few delaminating tyres after hitting big potholes. Sometimes the tyre noise changes but not always.

Definite change in tyre noise but I'd put that down to more sawtoothing due to the rear camber issue... Will start doing some swaps and see what happens :)

Don't put it off as it can lead to high speed blowouts.

Cheers for the heads up, will sort it tonight :)
