Front drop link replacement - spline size

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Need to replace the front drop links on the car. Does anyone know the spline bit size that I'll need to do it?

Have only allen keys at the mo and those will be no good so gonna go buy some.

Thanks,

Chris.

If you are replacing them it is probably quicker to split the nut to get them off. They tend to be very rusty and it takes a lot of soaking with WD40 or similar to get them undone cleanly. You don't get a lot of purchase on the splines, even with the correct tool.

Another option is to clamp some mole grips on to the other side to stop it spinning.

I would just invest in a good quality nut splitter and do it that way if they are being replaced.

:) Funny you should say that. I had a go with an allen key last night and that just rounded it off inside. Managed to get a proper spline this morning from Unipart but I'm also going out to get a steel cutting disc for the angle grinder as I can't find my other ones. Worst comes to the worst I'll chop the old ones off. What a PITA. :(

EDIT: I also bought some mole grips today in case too.....I won't be beaten.

Ended up just cutting my old ones off too. They were in a right state.

Moral of the story - when fitting new ones put plenty of coppaslip on the threads :-)

Too late lol

Well, got em done. On the first one as I'd tried an allen key on the top one and rounded it off inside I had to cut the nut off with the angle grinder. But with the spline on the bottom one and both on the other side it was fairly easy, although I did drown them in WD40 first.

Just goes to show if you have the right tools things are easier.

As far as the car goes now it's freshened the front up nicely and the slight knocking/ loose feeling over low speed rough surfaces has gone. Just goes to show how much effect they have.

Next up, new rear tyres on Tuesday and both track arms & 4WA on Wednesday......

After that it's a new wheel as the one I rubbed down and sprayed up is now unbalance-able by the looks of things. :(
