Old vs New

Featured Replies

Now with various car models you might reasonably expect that during passage of time they have improved and positively moved forward, but is that really true in all cases. Thinking within and outside VAG, what do members think based on your own views and experiences? Typically my budget has only ever stretched to older Skodas so it's a little difficult to compare to the newer shiney equivalents.

So I like older models and I like their newer equivalents, but which ones better, there's only one way to find out...........

if you like to repair the car yourself and enjoy looking after the car then old cars are more enjoyable.if you just want a car to get you from a to b then new cars are the way to go.

I've always changed marque when I've changed car but I've always found that as I move to a newer car things like ride quality and interior materials have always improved.

However conversely since getting the octy I've not been in any car in a similar price bracket that has had better interior quality. Premium marques yes but not equivalents.

I suppose piece of mind is important to a lot so newer = better although that's far from the truth. My previous 2, bought second hand, Subarus gave me no probems whatsoever I wish the same could be said for my current, bought brand new, Octy.

I'm fast coming to the conclusion that for me older is better, even with the same marque manufacturers are too eager to make things so that you can't service / improve or generally tinker with them - it's my chuffing car I should be able to do what I want with it!

Its also depends what you are judging the car on. I have a 1989 and 2007 Skoda. They couldn't be more different if they tried. The Octavia is quiet, powerful, quick, comfortable, relaxing. The Rapid is small, loud, bouncy and relatively unrefined.

So practically the Octavia wins hands down. But its also alot more expensive. For smiles per bucks, and character, the Rapid wins hands down. Really they're incomparable, so I bought both to have the best of both worlds!

My older car might have less things on it, but then it's just less things to go wrong.

^ Yep good point Daisy. Not easy to draw comparisons I know but already some good points made, especially the DIY'able aspect ;)

I wish I could still buy the old Passat B3 and B4 estate, I honestly found them superb and I really dont think VW have bettered it yet. Roomy, comfy, reliable, well made, easy to DIY service and not a bad drive. Yes they werent exciting but just bloody good.

Im amazed that at the same time, VW were also producing the dreadful MkIII Golf.... had one for a while, disgusting car!

My lad has a 94 MKIII Golf and yes the lower inner front wings/sills are now mostly just filler once we'd repaired the extent of corrosion + it doesn't return a great mpg but in saying that it is the 1.8 spi. Not one of VW's better attempts.

I had a 1.9tdi..... both sills rotted at the front, including inner ones. All four arches went rusty but the amazing thing was how bits just kept falling off, lower front reflectors, glovebox, radio all fell off! However, the engine was a peach.

Yeah second that lemonvrs. The engine keeps on going it's just a shame the rest of the car falls apart around you!

FIGHT!!!

I think older cars just feel and drive much better the hot hatches of the 80's might not be as refined but they are way more fun and very nearly as quick too i prefere driving my old mk2 golf gti 16v than any modern car i have ever driven on a nice sunny b road blast. As a point a to point b car tho i would take one of the dull as dishwater modern cars anyday

1995 MK3 Golf GTi 16v, my first decent fastish car, lowered on coilovers & stuck to the road like glue.

Could repair it at the side of the road
