Wow, just an email back from Superchips as I wanted to get my Bluefin switched over to my new car.

I originally bought the handset for the wife for her new VRS in 2008 as a birthday present, I sold the car and bought a BMW 325d, they charged me again £160 plus Vat for this I thought I have the unit it would be silly to waste it so I moved it over.

Now we have a 2012 VRS which is lovely TDi still, and I was hoping they would match/hold at least the previous price so I emailed them for another quote and they returned with £160+Vat valid until the end of May.

I just had the email reply saying that the price had gone up to £306!!!

But isn't that effectively THREE different maps you've had from them, for the 3 different cars? PD vRS, BMW, CR vRS.

The bluefin device is just for getting the maps on and off the cars isn't it?

Not sure how you would upload the map anyway as the newer ECU's need to be physically opened up now.

Correct, The reason i bought it in the first place is it could be removed and swapped over to a new car for a minimal charge, clearly now thats not the case.

Thanks for the link, but that was over a year ago and Superchips do offer the bluefin for the car so I don't see why they would offer you a plug device if it didn't work.

I wonder if someone has found a way around this yet, we had the same issue on the Focus ST then someone in some random country found the way in to the ECU and sold it to the main companies in that market and no doubt very rich.

Yes it was fully uninstalled each time.

hmmm may get one of these then if i don't need to tamper with the ECU!

Most tuners have worked a way around the Bosch coding of the ECU meaning it doesn't need removing and it can be tuned via the OBD port.

Just a simple question, sorry if it's a stupid easy one, but,,,

With a blue fin re map, it is a case of plugging it in, leaving for a while, then all done?? Right?

Also, if I go to shark, what do they do differently??

Bluefin does work that way it reads the ecu, you plug it into your pc it then sends the file to superchips and they send you back a modified file to the handset and you unload that to the car. nice and easy, However I would say Shark would have a better map and you will get may get a better service from them also.

I think it's more important to understand how it manages to do it via the obd port when some tuners prefer to open up the ecu and do it properly i.e how it stores and where it stores the modified tables. At the end of the day, the handset is just a delivery mechanism like the shark STS unit so you effectively got an entirely new remap for £160. You cant really grumble with that surely? Personally, and from direct experience, I'm not a lover of super chips as you know. Give me Shark any day of the week. :-)

I agree that £160 (Superchips/bluefin)was a good price for a new map, now with the price rise they have simply provide me with a reason to go to shark.

You couldve just stuck it on ebay, theres a good chance it wouldve worked on the same model/engine code.

No I think you've misunderstood. Shark map for the tfsi is around 450, but if you sign up for Freedom membership here for only £12 you'll get a 10% discount.
