2.0 140bhp TDI - a truly fantastic engine in a great car

Featured Replies

I've had the superb now for two months and after 7000km I have to share my delight with this engine! It pulls beautifully, power delivery is exactly how I would want it and the gearbox that it's coupled with has all the right gear ranges. The fuel economy is tremendous for such an enormous car (combined 5.8l since new). I had an octavia II vrs tfsi before this and although the power was much higher, for some reason I like the power delivery much more from the tdi. The engine certainly feels like it's got more than 140bhp.

After the warranty runs out in 3years and 10months (long way away) i'll probably do a remap and do something with the suspension and brakes to make it handle a little better in corners at faster speeds.

I'm not sure what tyres the UK version comes with, but I got Dunlops (17") on mine and they aren't particularly good. The grip isn't good in corners and they seem a little soft.

I hated Dunlops on my Octavia

Are you running DSG or manual Mike? I have the same engine and find it perfectly suited to my needs.

Mine came with Pirelli tyres from the factory.

Have to agree, had mine now for about a year, 35000km and I'm averaging about the same. Went on a slightly longer trip last week with a fully loaded car + 5ppl and managed to get down to just under 5 litre/100km and that was at speeds varying from 120-130km/h. I would like some more power though but I always want that :)

Coops, I run a manual on mine. Though I hear the DSG box is very good I prefer manual cars as they are more fun for me. I think your car must also be similar spec, as SE I think is equivalent to the Ambition over here in Slovakia. I would love a set of Pirellis for the summer! :) I have Pirelli winters and cant wait to try them on the Superb.

What colour is yours? Mine is a white twindoor

Bobbe, I kow what you mean...a little more power would be great! :) I do quite a lot of motorway driving and even when I am heavy footed and do between 140-160km/h the consumption doesn't average more than 5.8l. My octavia VRS would be using around 10l/100km. Diesel is around 10cents cheaper over here (1.38EUR) as well so though there is not the same power I have no regrets. What are fuel prices like in Sweden?

Yes i have SE spec with sunset glass and heated front seats as option, oh and it is white also:

Very nice! Excellent colour choice!!! ;) Mine had heated front and rear seats as standard...as extras i got the heated front windscreen, bluetooth, full size spare and towbar...yours is far cleaner than mine though :)

I went from the 1.9 105 to the 2.0 140 and i have to say, what a difference, as you say it's very smooth and having the extra 6th gear on long runs i can get 63MPG out of mine.

Mine came with Continental Sport Contacts but i'm sure that's the cause of very loud road rumble i'm getting.

Another thing i've noticed is my last Octy was an estate , my new one is a hatch , and maybe its in my head but the suspension on the estate felt much stiffer than the hatch. I don't feel confident throwing it into a bend the same as it wobbles a bit more, but i love the engine .

Fuel prices are almost exactly the same here.

Actually the most impressive fuel consumption I've had was on a longer trip up north when the speed never dropped below 200-225 km/h for 300km. It only used 1l/100km which is extremely impressive for that speed.

One litre per 100km or have we missed another number? :giggle:

lots of numbers missing me thinks. This equates to 282mpg at 130mph. Chuffin' Nora!

Maybe he meant it used 1l of engine oil :giggle: ?

Hi, Is yours a PD 140 or a CR 140? just interested as will be buying one soon, CR170 is bit expensive and the CR140 are hard to get hold off, plenty of PD140's to choose from though

Edited by bryanp

hi my last car was a 140 pd compaired to the 170cr which i now have i would say that the pd engine was smoother than the cr the only downside is the engine makes more noise than the cr.i had my old pd remapped by shark tuning and i would say my currant car is no quicker than the old one. i would go and buy a superb with the pd engine. the only reason i changed was i wanted the superb estate

Mine is a CR I think, how can I check? It's a 2012 model year though built in October/November 2011

In fact when I took delivery of my car I asked the dealer plainly what the difference is between the 140 and 170 in terms of the physical engine. He said there is no difference and the engine is exa?ty the same with just different mapping/ecu programming and rather than spending circa 2000EUR on a '170' engine you may as well get the'140' and later (i.e. After warranty) have it remapped to 170 for around 700EUR or less.

Apparently the only reason Skoda do this is so that they have different price points... maybe someone can give more of an insight on this but from a marketing/sales point of view it makes sense...pay more if you want a bit more power.

I think they are right the engine is the same, but I've heard the injectors are different (I doubt this) and the turbo is variable geamoetry (more inclined to accept this one).
