Googlemail to gmail change

Featured Replies

If you change your googlemail to gmail via the web pages, do this kill your googlemail address?

I know you can use both, but a friend wants to make the change to a gmail address as using webmail complicates things for them (job hunting)

You can use either.

Your Google/gmail account is the same

I think they get directed to the same account

No it shouldn't do -there are options for all of that when you make the change. I changed from @Googlemail to @Gmail a few months ago and haven't had any issues -I'll still get massages sent to @Googlemail

Me2 but it's worth sticking to one or the other

or it can be a bit of a pain if you've used that

email address as a log in somewhere.

Can you bin off the googlemail?

I'm pretty sure if you have formatting in your email address it can be left out as well, ie [email protected] is the same as [email protected]

I'm not so sure as I have an email address of [email protected] and forgot when setting it up the other day on the iPhone and put in [email protected] and it rejected my password. I took out the '.' in the email address and it accepted my details without changing the password.

I'm not sure that way round (and with login), but I know if I email my mate's email (which is [email protected]) as [email protected] it works.

I switched over a year ago now, no issues and I still get mail sent to @googlemail.com that comes to me no problem :)

I changed years ago, when "gmail" was first allowed in the UK, had no issues at all; my original Google Checkout account is still registered with the @googlemail version, but everything still works and every email gets to me.

The main difference is in your outgoing email address. You'll still receive both @gmail.com and @googlemail.com variants, but the default address you send as can only be one or the other. By changing, you will be changing the primary outgoing address, which may or may not matter to you (i.e. if you deal with a lot of mailing lists, for example, changing your address may stop you from sending, if you deal with automated systems which are expecting email from @googlemail.com then they might break, etc).

And although you can leave any dots out of the email address and still receive the mail OK, you do have to get the login details exactly right.
