VRS Clutch Change - Best Price/Tips on removal

Featured Replies

Hey all,

Got - another VRS.. (3rd + pd100!!) what I didnt find out on purchase was that the clutch was slipping slightly at 2.5k, milage is 115k so I suppose its to be expected (remapped).

Looking at costing - I could cry, probably about the only downside to these brilliant cars (bar rear elect windows :p). Nonetheless you good people might already have been through this so;

*I understand Sachs organic friction plate generally gets the thumbs up from everyone, do members get it cheap anywhere? Do we have links within the trade etc?

*DMF I will get if needs be once the clutch is out - with the slave cylinder obviously being done! Eurocarparts?

Tips etc appreciated - hope the removal should be similar to golf mkiv forum guides - perhaps I will get photos etc depending on conditions!

Ta, Nick

i fitted a solid flywheel and never looked back but some disagree

Could you list the advantages and disadvantages - having been through both?!

Advantages, knowing it's solid and won't fail after high milage or an extreme map, plus you can drive a bit more lazily for overtaking without worrying so much about accelerating from low RPM.

Disadvantages, it's noisy when idling with the clutch pedal up.

I've gone from Sachs/DMF to Sachs/SMF, when driving it feels pretty much the same (although my DMF was failing and feeling a bit sloppy so the SMF made it feel right again, but a new DMF would also have done the job so it's hard to tell), the only difference I notice is the chatter on idle.

So chatter, presumably cheaper too? Is it really noticeable? Think one of my previous VRS' had a solid fly, or the dmf was ruined?! (clutch never slipped - pd150 turbo) but never found out exactly what it was obviously!

Think my DMF is fine, looking through all the symptom lists - Unit18 can do a clutch change at a reasonable price, as much as i would love to give it a go, i have lost the access to ramps I used to work on so its just wether they take it out and find the DMF borked if I go Solid Fly or DMF!

Not cheaper necessarily. My kit was virtually the same price whether I got it with a Sachs DMF, or the Jabba SMF, with the SMF being a few quid more.
