DMF - VRS Diesel with solid

Featured Replies

What are these cars like with a solid flywheel?

My car has a mild map, and although the clutch is fine at the mo, I'm thinking down the line...

Cheers

Rattly, but solid. I have the Jabbasport kit, same as BossFox (who's posted a video of his somewhere in the past to help me make up my mind), and although it's a little noisier than the old DMF, I don't mind it. Neighbours probably aren't quite so happy :)

If you arent chasing power then DMF :)

Is that kit a true solid flywheel?

I asked on PH - and received some real shock feedback of super rattly engines, failed crankshafts from fleet cars fitted with SMF's, failed transmissions... the list goes on

Here's the thread

Yep, it's an 8.5kg lightened solid flywheel.

Yeah, lightened flywheels and diesels aren't a good mix. SMF's have to be a lot heavier than a DMF to acheive a similar result. Going lighter and SMF would be hard on the fillings.

Light flywheels are for petrol screamers that need to do 8,000rpm twice to reach 100km/h and in that application the lower rotating weight can make a difference. Diesels having more torque and pulling higher gears don't benefit in the same way.

Having had a quick look at your link (I haven't read all of it), I have to be honest and say I'm not too concerned. I know people with SMFs and as long as they use the right kits, they haven't had problems. Someone touched on it in on Pistonheads, that you need a dampened clutch plate for use with an SMF, which was the reason I had to buy a full clutch kit; the friction plate for use with a DMF is solid, as the DMF provides the dampening, however when you buy an SMF kit the friction plate is sprung, so it will still provide some dampening but not to the same level (hence being noisier). There is of course a chance that I'm wrong, but there are plenty of people running properly designed SMF clutch kits on here (whether it be an uprated Sachs kit or the OEM-spec Valeo kits) and I personally haven't read of anyone having gearbox/crankshaft failure as a result on Briskoda.

edit - as for the weight, Jabba used to sell a 6.5kg flywheel, and Helix still sell a 7.5kg version, and again I haven't really heard of problems with either. I went with the heavier Jabba instead of Helix because it was only a little bit more expensive and the extra weight should help reduce noise.

I'm running a lightened flywheel, while I'm not expert it doesn't take a genius to feel the difference, rev's rise much quicker, made a massive difference on mine for sure. If your not going big power though I'd not bother.

Matt, did you notice a difference in MPG out of interest?!

TBH I never kept check on my mpg way back before I had the smf. Deffo notice the difference though, how quick the revs climb & drop. Obviously this is with a lighter flywheel, not a big heavy "silent" setup.
