Foglights

Featured Replies

Although you wouldn't necessarily realise it by looking out of the window, winter is but a fading memory and we are enjoying several hours of something approximating to daylight every 24 hours. This means that, sadly for them, the illegal foglight users have not the flimsiest shred of an excuse for driving around lit up like a cheap hot dog stand during their morning commute.

HOWEVER...this morning it was, actually, foggy. In fact, where I live - at the crest of hill on the southern edge of Edinburgh - it was very foggy. Waiting to join the main road this morning, I calculated that the proportions of vehicle illumination in use were approximately as follows:

Headlights <10%

Sidelights only ~50%

No lights at all ~40%

Foglights <1%

Visibility was very definitely less than 100m. I know that because of the number of unlit silver Vauxhalls (do Vauxhalls come in any other colour?) that only became visible through the fog about 50m away.

I had to be extremely careful pulling out of that T-junction this morning.

I find it mildly ironic that the drivers of silver Vauxhalls seem to be amongst the keenest to show off their foglights on clear winter nights when, although it may be dark, visibility can be measured in kilometres - as frequently evidenced by the lights of Fife which can be seen sparkling across the Firth of Forth. Come the summer, though, they get all shy and seem to prefer not to be seen at all...

That is all. Please carry on.

I know what you're saying, this trend for driving around with fog lights blazing 24-7 is bizarre. I use mine when it gets, er, foggy.

Been using my fog lights a lot this week. In Aberdeen the fog has been below lamppost height for 4 days and nights. Just been a total nightmare. But it is amazing the amount drivers that rely heavily on their automatic gizmo to turn lights on for them when it's dark they just don't think about manually switching them on during fog and bad weather. Baffles me.

Swmbo's brother got pulled for having no lights on in fog, he thought the auto lights on his jag would come on. Some people should be taught how things work lol

Sent from my Galaxy S2 not a Crapple!

There is hope though - was following a guy this morning and we'd come off the motorway where visibility was poor. Onto the slower roads though it wasn't, so at a roundabout a politely flashed my headlights at him and pointed to his rear fogs, he switched them off and waved to apologise.

what's the point of using fog light in fog? If it's foggy no one will see just how cool I am with my 4 lights.

The other halfs new(er) Fiat 500 is our first car with DRLs.

(And the cutest little fog lamps :D )

Looking forward to being stopped many times by not

particularly clued up police. When I find the right car, my

new(er) car will also have DRLs but I suspect I'll be the

one that gets stopped in either of these cars because I

fit the "He looks a bit dodgy" profile. I'm sure my wife will

be okay, she looks respectable and law abiding. But I'll

have a fiver that I'll be stopped numerous times for "foglights"

on when I shouldn't have.

That said, how could I possibly look "dodgy" in a bright yellow bubble car.

Erm... Apart from the obvious that is :D

I really dont think there are too many police officers that are not aware of '500's' DRL's over the passed 2 years or so.

At least they look like Side lights that have been left on to the not so bright..

I still curse the ar5es in Skodas with those stupid looking Blue lights on.

I was even embarrassed to drive with Dipped beams on with those stupid LED Side Lights looking like 'Driving Lights'.

The Lights are now changed to something that looks like sidelights hopefully.

(I had already Disabled them as DRL's, which double as DRL's then become sides, for those that do not know.)

That's no way to talk about the boys (and girls) in blue. :D:rofl:

My sister is a copper in London. I'm not anti police in any way but

they do have a technique which they call "foot in the door".

They're looking for a minor infringement so they can make a full stop

and have a proper nosey particularly if they don't like the look of the driver.

(I get this a lot btw, perhaps I should get a haircut and a shave :D )

So, damaged numberplate, bulb out, seatbelt not on, bald tyre that kind of

thing. But they can say they pulled you for the foglights being on even if they

know full well they are drls.

And once you're stopped they can go to town on you even if the

original reason was "I thought you had your foglights on".

I'm a good boy now but had some brushes with the law back when I was a teen

and every time I have to "deal with" a policeman stuff that happened over 20

years ago is brought up. And it was only minor kids stuff, I never hurt anybody

or took something that wasn't mine.

Just to be clear incase you were not being ironic.

I meant Fabia & Fabia mk 2 vRS Blue-ish DRL's, not police cars.

Smileys added to my remark :)

All is right with the world.

IMO the reason they are using fogs in daylight and night without fogs, is simply the newer vehicle have drls so they think they are missing out, they need to get a ticket as they blind oncoming traffic when used illegally koks

Whilst I'm not in support of the 'improper use of front fog lights' it has to be said I've never been dazzled by them...

Annoying? Yes.

Dangerous? No, not really (at least in my eyes!).

Agreed,

because 'front Fog lights' are not the same as 'Driving Lights' & 'Spot lights' that are on different beam pattern.

Ar5es that dont know their front 'posing car d1ck Fogs' also illuminates the rear fog need banned along with Driving Light displayers who use in non poor visabilty s,ituations like on the high street day and night,

Banned from driving for life and made to were a pink velour leisure suit always.

Without it tucked into their socks.

Lots of fog lights round here that are on seem to have at least one pointing to the sky, resulting in being blinded, dangerous in my opinion. I guess because they are not tested at any time they are often un-aimed. Makes it even more annoying that the drive gains absolutely no extra useful vision, even at night.

Don't seem to be too clued up on my dad's DRL's in the foglight spot of his new Fabia estate. Been flashed many a time, even by the police (local PD as opposed to traffic though) when he's been giving me a lift to the garage to collect my car. :giggle:
