Featured Replies

Hey guys I'm pritty good with DIY mechanics and in looking to do a clutch swap with a solid fly unit so I was wondering if anyone has done a howto guide?

Haynes?

Sorry, couldn't resist

just google "1.8T chancing clutch",you'll find plently DIYs from Mk4 golfs, and is the same thing

It's not hard at all, you'll need a friend to help you holding the gearbox .

Last time I changed a gearbox and clutch was a mk3 golf ,working outside in february at +2deg C

one of the easiest clutches to do as box is easy to get out.

last one i did was done in under 3 hours on my back with no air tools.

you will need a long multispline socket to undo the drive shaft bolts.

Ahh thanks furry given me some confidence

Yes, remove airbox and battery/holder for better access, then undo driveshafts and tie them clear. After that, you'll need to support the engine block as the gearbox mount fixes to the nearside chassis arm. Then take off the dog mount, undo the bolts around there'll housing, inc starter, disconnect electrics, disconnect the linkages and the clutch line if taking the box out altogether. Gearbox is heavy mind so you'll need to rig up something to support it.

Clutch/flywheel are bolt on items, and even centring the plate is easy enough!

i believe but dont quote me. flywheel bolts torque 90nm plus 90 degree turn. pressure plate bolts 20nm, use some thread lock if i were you too.

clutch must be centred exactly or gearbox will not go on

Wish I had done mine!

I paid £300+ for mine and the clutch is ****!

clutch is...awesome?

Be careful with the box, it is very heavy. When I changed mine a couple of years ago, I didn't have it supported properly and put myself in hospital :(
