Buzz under the dash

Featured Replies

I have searched this issue and found someone with a similar problem, but a solution was never reported.

For a while now i have been getting this annoying buzz at around 2000 rpm. It has recently gotten louder and starts earlier, about 1500 rpm and goes away over about 2500 rpm. I have had several mechanics look into it and not tracked it down. My most recent guy has spent am hour or so trying everything. He did find the alternator bearing had ceased up, which he replaced. This solved the full lock buzz, but not my engine speed related one. It is definitely related to engine speed and not road speed, is there in all gears, and therefore is at full volume driving at 70 in sixth. He found that you could only hear it from inside the car with the doors shut. He tried holding and fiddling all parts of the engine, but nothing made it change. We both agree that it seems to be emanating from under the glovebox (yes the obvious of clearing out the glovebox and door bins shave been checked).

Anybody have any ideas? Thanks.

Silly one this but you sure its not the recirculating flap for the aircon? Saying that it usually makes a scratching noise from what others have said lol

Wasps. I like that :)

I don't know how to remove the glovebox. And how would i check the aircon recirculation flap? Where is it?

Also forgot to add that it doesn't happen till the engine is warmed up.

Thanks.

The glove-box has 5-6 hex headed screws accessible when open iirc

I've had something similar on my 110 Elegance and it got to the point that the noise was happening even on tickover. Took half the bottom part of the dash and centre console apart to find it but found nothing, so I concluded that it must be on the underside in the engine bay.

Anyhow I did find out where the noise was coming from. If you look at the bulkhead in the engine bay and look downwards you will see the large heatsheild in the centre of the bulkhead. Sandwiched between the heatshield and the actual bulkhead are two gear linkage cables. Each cable has a 'star' type rubber grommit/spacer on it. All you need to do it 'adjust' the heatsheild simply by pressing up on it so the gear linkage cable don't move or rattle about and that solved the problem!

It might also be worth checking the heatsheild fasteners on the underside where the exhaust is near the gear lever as these can work loose and cause a buzzing noise too.

Easy fix which cost nothing
