Looking to do a cambelt change, is there naything else I should do whilst I am at it?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I am looking to do my first cambelt change, I have been quoted a reasonable price and will be getting it done soon.

Whilst the mechanics are at it should I get them to do anything else around that area? I have 155k on the clock so I would imagine bits are getting to the end of there life, so is there anything else worth doing?

Regards,

Damian,.

I got genuine VW parts from genuine VW spares, a guy called Dale who works for a VW dealership. You can find him on the lupo forum

Don't suppose you could list all of the items and part nos dude? I have searched too lol.

I had a gates Cam Belt and Tensioner kit fitted, water pump too. £200 inc labour!

Now that's cheap!

Thats very cheap considering genuine parts cost that alone ;-)

im guessing your labour was free ?

No, labour was included in the price, Cam belt kit etc was at trade price though!

I changed quite a few timing kits on my friend's cars like Transporter 5,Clio,MK3 Golf,Octy 2.0i ,Logan and from my point of view Gates belts are higher quality made rather than Continental.Just my point of view.I'm also an authorized automotive technician, but let's forget that.

On the Mk1 Octy 2.0 petrol,my friend insisted, insainly insited to tight the belt more than I usual do,he thought is smarter,I gave up and listen to him , tight it just lets say 15% more on his request.

After 4 hours the belt started to get worn and get a bit of melted feel on the outside. Was a Continental belt.

This is what it cost me

Cambelt Kit £85.00

Water Pump £32.00

Seperate Cambelt Tensioner (not included within the kit) £65.00 (£100.10 retail!)

Thermostat & Seal £20.00

And that was for genuine parts

Try vwspares.co.uk

Cambelt kit with tensioner

Water pump

Not a bad price really for around £105 for the bits including delivery. They do genuine parts too but from my experience Gates belts are more than upto the job.

Cheers muchly, much appreciated bud.

ive been quoted £65 for a gates belt and tensioner! bargain if you ask me. my local mechanic (a good friend) is doing it for £100 too

You need to change the other tensioner also not the oné that comes in the kit ;-)

There's 2 tensionors one comes with the kit, the other one's a hydraulic one

vwspares the another kit that also comes with the hydraulic tensioner. Think its about £80 for the kit.

But what do you think about this cambelt? This is a genuine part from a BKD engine. It looks like a rusty cambelt. Is this normal for a 1.5 year cambelt and for less then 50k miles?
