Question I should probably know but don't!

Featured Replies

Okay, I realise this may sound a bit daft, but it's one of those things that I know just works so i've stopped noticing it!

Do the puddle lights on my pre-fl ONLY come on when the light sensor tells it it's dark enough to use them??

Reason I ask is because I got some replacement LED bulbs to make them a bit brighter, just been out to fit them and noticed the lights weren't working when I opened the door even before I changed anything! There's more than a fair chance I would never have noticed them on during the day as it's obviously light enough to see, but i'm wondering whether there's a problem or whether they only come on under certain conditions. Fiddling with turning the lights on & off made no difference and I can't for the life of me remember whether they come on at night nowadays as I don't really remember noticing!

Answer; yes! Stopped raining just long enough for me to nip out and cover the sensor and it all worked as it should. :)

Where is this light sensor?

Where is this light sensor?

Top centre of the windscreen.

The puddle lights (Entry lights in the manual) only came on the Elegance, Scout & L&K on the late pre-fl as standard, so they would all have the sensor. It's also the rain sensor if you have the Scout or L&K, and from the fact when I had my windscreen replaced last month, one unit must do everything as the only types of replacement windscreen were with or without the sunstrip and with or without the sensor (although Skoda appear to have placed the sensor slightly different distances from the top lip as this was the only other thing the screen people had to check).

The sensors are probably all built with both circuits, but only one function may work on the Elegance as the only upgrade option on that model is the Light Assistant, NOT the Rain Sensor which was only available and came built in as standard on the other two models as well as the Light Assistant. The Elegance loom may be different to only accomodate the Light Assistant.

Ah yes. I have rain sensors and the puddle lights. I'll have to check that they don't come on in the daylight. Never been too fussed with the rain sensor though. Never quite gets it right 70% of the time :(

Yeah, they probably won't. Like I said, when there was a break in the rain, I stuck a bit of card over the sensor and the puddle lights came on. I think it's just so normal for them to be there that I don't notice it anymore, so when I had to actually think about it, I wasn't sure when the last time I actually saw them on! :)

Annoyingly, the light sensor seems hit & miss sometimes too: randomly on when it's fairly light and not when it's quite obviously much darker than normal. As if that wasn't rubbish enough, there's no way to alter the rain sensor either! I would rather actually have the manual type of windscreen control where you have an intermittant wipe with set time adjustment on the stalk, but you can't do this! :(

What stumps me (thinking along these lines) is when the puddle lights come on, but the Leaving Home lights stay off.

I haven't had time to do any searching on this, but if the rain sensor is deactivated with VCDS, do the wipers become normal intermittent, with the switch on the top of the stalk controlling the time interval between wipes? And if this can be done, does it switch off the light sensor part of the bit on the screen?

Am sure I've seen someone on here do that and the auto/intermittant position does nothing, so you lose all ways round. Maybe something else needs to be activated in VCDS.

Hmmm, that's what I vaguely remember when I asked years ago on here. Unless anything's changed or someone's found another way, it was a bit of a non starter which is why I left it dead in the water. Bummer!

You'd have thought it would be easy as well, wouldn't you?

if it was easy, it wouldn't be fun, or a challenge ;)
