Mirror glass fell off

Featured Replies

yesterday whilst reversing out of the drive. The glass has cracked and broken in one corner where it hit the tarmac, but it seems like the adhesive failed. Pain in the ass to sort out a repair, I guess its going to need the correct adhesive to ensure the heat is transferred when the demist is switched on.

Loads of threads on this including mine. Check them out regarding replacement.

This now seems so common that I think Skoda ought to pay for it, regardless of warranty times etc. or do a recall.

What age is the car?

Where is the cheapest place to find a replacement? Reading the other threads I could use some double sided sticky tape, but the glass is missing a corner so will need replacing.

Whilst reversing my car off the drive the other morning, I noticed my Glass was hanging out off my n/s mirror, thought some scroat had tried to pinch it. MY 58 cr

Luckily I noticed mine wobbling while on a drive, before it fell off.

This is all very odd - does anyone know of it happening to any other make or model at all?

Judging by the several threads on this forum, the adhesive must be marginal, to say the least !!

Is it a problem on other Skodas or just Mk. 2 Octavias?

I had this problem with mine - no, not on the heat setting all the time only when needed.

Quite funny looking back - I totally forgot about the heated mirrors as it came off in the summer, so I stuck it back on with some random building grade adhesive I had kicking around in the shed. Had a 'doh' moment a few days later when I realised the [now essentially concreted] mirror probably wouldn't transfer any heat, but much to my surprise it worked fine - just started to clear around 30 seconds longer than the other one :)

The trick is, in my opinion (!) to use a very strong adhesive (not tape) but in only a few small blobs. That way most of the heating surface is not affected. So I used 5 or 6 small blobs of quick set epoxy resin, holding the glass in correct position with masking tape while it set. Works now exactly as before, and is probably 100 times stronger.

I'd be interested but only want one!

pm me if you want one, you can see from the thread they are not scratched, £110 for a pair from dealer, apart from the spots, still stuck perfect and heat up. I am of the opinion now that leaving on heat all the time keeps them stuck, you do not get more mpg if off

I've used some number plate tape to fix mine temporarily.
