Steering pulling left on 1.9 with power steering?

Featured Replies

Hi

I recently had my tracking reset after hitting a pot-hole. I'm not sure but it seems to pull left even on roads with little or no camber. I'm aware of keeping rightward pressure on the wheel and if I let go of the wheel the car drifts left to the kerb.

It's a 1.9 diesel Felicia with power steering. Am I imagining it and is it down to road camber or could there be something still out?

Driving on a straight road the steering wheel is pointing slightly to the right. The front tyres are an identical pair, pressures are checked regularly.

Thanks for any help.

Mitch

hi there i have the same problem with my 1.6 ps air con they have not done the tracking right been back to garage loads they say the backs are out i am going for a 4 wheel geomotry better than tracking as they do all 4 wheels

Maybe I should take it back too. Should they centre the wheel when setting the tracking - I mean is there a centre sensor for the power steering anywhere?

I've checked for binding brakes but if one ever hangs on it's usually front right on mine and that would tend to pull it the other way. I can usually tell if it's starting to stick by the brake dust on the wheel.

No Sensor And yes they should clamp steering wheel

Did you get the 4 wheel geo check?

I had a garage other than the tyre depot check my steering alignment out for me. They checked castor and camber as well as track and turns out I'd bent a mount somewhere. They "adjusted" it and I get the impression this may have involved a big adjusting hammer :) Still it runs straight now.

did you see with your own eyes how the tracking was done?

or did they let you wait comfortably in the waiting room pretending that genius mechanics can't be disturbed while 'working' ?

because I've seen it all... if you get my drift.

on the other hand, things as simple as replacing dirty (old) steering fluid and overall cleaning of inner parts can make wonders sometimes.

The first garage used lasers and pronounced everything OK. I was there because I wanted to see if I'd done any other damage but can't vouch for their competence.

The second garage is one I've been using for years and they use good old fashioned methods so I left it with them and it has come back with a significantly better drive. They're a Mini and Metro specialist so maybe not so reliant on computers and lasers as some garages are now.

I may have misrepresented the quality of the job. I can see what they've done - they've moved the lower wishbone rear mount outwards (I can see the clean area where it used to sit). I think they've re-shaped it or enlarged the holes but it's a tidy job and makes sense as the impact obviously pushed that wheel back and shoved that mount inboard. No sign of any brute force at all.
