Fabia vRS Estate long term test.

Featured Replies

Two downsides as far as I'm concerned are as you say the lack of a diesel (given the mk1 was so popular, an odd choice by Skoda) & DSG. Although good, many still prefer a manual box including me.

This is why I didn't get a new shape vrs, don't mind the tsi lump but the dsg box is terrible and the amount of problems that come into work with them is shocking.

so, so far that's 100% of responders who would still want a diesel Fabia vRS. When will Skoda take notice! I heard the DSG takes some getting used to but as mentioned, I would still prefer a manual.

Is it 100% of responders before my post that dont have or like a Mk 2 vRS,

and 100% that dont drive a DSG almost daily.

How many on here have had to work on a DSG that was faulty?

Is that the 6 speed DSG's or the 7 Speeds as on the vRS?

George, my comment re 100% of responders was tongue in cheek and applies only to this thread. What I, personally, would like is a diesel vRS with a six speed manual 'box. As I said, the DSG can take some getting used to. Maybe Skoda could transplant the 2.0tDI 140PS lump with DSG or manual into the Fabia2?

Lump might be the important word concerning the engine, they are going smaller and lighter from now on it looks like.

If you have only heard that they take some getting used to,

it might be worth giving it a try to see how or if you can get used to it.

Things move on.

But still plenty of Diesel, Manual, Estates from various manufacturers including VAG with some go about them available these days.

The only way I could have a diesel is without a dpf due to my driving situation. Lots short journeys. If it was derv I wouldn't have bought it.

My last Octavia was a TDi DSG. My next car will most likely be a smaller estate and I would very much like to go back to DSG (or similar) 'box but as yet I have found no one that buts a ten clutch auto in a small diesel.

I am hoping the new Rapid might do this. I cloud cope without and estate in a bigger car than the Fabia but don't really want to go as big as Octavia.

If you want a rattly oil-burning warm hatch with a manual gear box, Skoda already make one - the Monte Carlo.

I'd rather have a Mk2 given the choice, much better engine, brilliant gearbox. Both are a bit cheap and plasticy inside, however.

I suppose what I was getting at is that there should be a choice, like with the petrol/ diesel Octy vRS'. VAG don't make a small, powerful diesel estate. No Polo estate at all, no A1 estate AFAIK and I'd rather walk than drive a Seat. I prefer disiesel, like many others and just think we should have the choice, given that the Mk1 Fabia vRS was so popular (and still is) even though there was no estate model previously. I just think there is a gap to be filled in the small estate market for those who prefer disiesel.

I was taking your thread seriously then came the bit,

"I'd rather walk than drive a Seat."

'Nobody as blind as a person that can not see',

my old Dad used to say.

(To late now to tell him it is,

'nobody as blind as a person that will not see'.)

After owning a couple of Seats in the past, I stand by my statement, George. Awful to drive and the interiors fell to bits. Maybe they've improved, maybe not but I don't intend to find out.

I have a feeling that down the line when you want to buy a car thats newer than 2012 & therefore will have a Euro 5 engine you will need to look at many to find what is ideal for you.

I would get one that suits and keep it,

because i feel that Euro 6 engines & emissions are going to make it very difficult to find cars that we like and are fun.

Tyre regs & TPMS as standard and what ever the EU dream up and the UK just 'assume the position' on.

2015-16 and MOT's might become what they planned on them being in 2012, and never got their way with.

I've got an Exeo, the build quality is miles better than the Fabia VRS I used to have. Good job people were prepared to change their opinions on Skoda eh?

That's because it's an Audi... ;)

That's because it's an Audi... ;)

they're all parts bin cars. my brother's 2001 Octavia, our 2001 Golf and the 2001 Leon we replaced it with all drive pretty much the same. none are bad but the VW interior was a bit nicer than the Skoda, which is a bit nicer than the SEAT, general sportiness was the reverse of that. out of the three the Octavia looks older/more dated externally

I think the 7 speed DSG is a work of genius.... took me a while to learn how to drive it, and I understand why people who jump in after a manual dont like it...

but you know what? I'm NEVER going back to a manual now....

second best thing about the mark II vRS after the engine, is the gearbox!

The gearbox is great and for covering ground quickly it's perfect. I do slightly miss the involvement of a manual but it's slower whereas DSG shifts perfectly every single time. Once you've learnt how to use the box in different scenarios it's wonderful. Many are stuck in their ways over DSG's and "automatics" and I'll admit I once was but DSG isn't comparable to a normal auto. I'm sure it shifts just as quick as I can on Gran Turismo.

The car itself is great. I'm writing up my 10,000 mile report at the moment.

look forward to reading that Martyn :)

all this is fine but,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I STILL WOULD WANT A DIESEL MK2 vRS!!

'Nike', as the saying goes.

Well since Skoda MK 2 vRS estates are now 2 years old and becoming a bargain buy,

why not just do that Engine and gearbox transplant to give you a vRS Diesel Estate.

I am sure the TSi engine with DSG box will sell easy enough to a Kit car builder & more than cover the price of the diesel engine you choose.

Simples when typed or said quickly.

or just a nice mk1.
