Power steering pump question. Serial numbers to models.

Featured Replies

My pump has failed recently, this has been diagnosed as so by Skoda and they want a huge amount for a new one, although the labour rates arent too bad. They did say they would fit a used pump if I sourced it myself. The problem is they won't give me the part number and I am hesitant to strip the front of the car down now especially since its going in for a timing belt and tensioner change this week on a goodwill free of charge basis, even though the car is out of the guarantee period, by a couple of months, but nevertheless.

So my question is can I fit a pump from the Polo or Roomster or any other Fabia II? Do the part numbers need to be exactly the same letter for letter as there seem to be a fair few, or is it enough that the pump is the same shape wise and plug wise?

Is your car not covered by a 3 year SKODA warranty in Poland ?

I have fitted used steering pumps to older cars and will where price or needs must, but i would not be fitting one to a nearly new car,

especially since your own 2 or 3 year old one has already failed on you.

the warranty here is only 2 years and mine is out by two months, hence very glad to here that skoda will do the cam chain free of charge. the pump they wont replace as one of the connectors was broken and this was due to the car being involved in a minor accident on the drivers side at some stage before i had it. the pump was fine at the time, but skoda claim water may have got in through the broken connector. we have had a lot of rain here recently and while i wouldnt call it floods, it did involve driving through standing water about 30 cm deep from time to time, so thats probably where the damage was done. so i have no bones with skoda regarding the pump (except maybe the price they want for a new one!!!), except that they wont give me the part number i need or any information on whether i can fit a pump from another car which is essentially the same, but where the part number may vary.

Just being nosey but how much are they saying the new pump will cost?

Before they are quoting a price, they surely know which pump it is!

Can you not go to the Skoda Parts desk with your VIN number or take the cars registration papers,

get them to show you the part & the part number or parts numbers and the price for each.

Go to a good 'Motor Factors' and check the price of the parts,

(if there is for the sake of the exercise there is a choice of 2 or 3 power steering pumps it may be for your application or vehicle, get the new price for each and compare)

Online,

Find out if there is a Pattern or Refurbished /exchange part that suits your vehicle, but much cheaper.

I really can not see there being much of a variation on the pump used or the price of them from whoever supplies to VAG.

all the best with it.

i did go to the parts desk, but they told me with the manager present that they are not in the habit of handing out part numbers, so thats as far as i can go there. as i say, i didnt want to cause a fuss as they will be doing the free of charge cam chain. incidentally the price for the pump without labour is the same as the cam chain parts and labour at skoda, so you have an idea of why i wasnt keen on paying for a new pump from skoda.

there are plenty of pumps on ebay and they do say that they will fit from roomsters polos from 2007 onwards (i have a 2010 tsi 105), but these are just ebay descriptions so one cant be sure.

I really would go to an Independent 'Motor Factor' or 'Trade' Car parts place and get the 'parts numbers' and price.

Maybe put some on here will be able to help, but i am not at home now and on a phone, so can not check for you, sorry.

good luck with it all.

thanks for your help, i used to own a garage here so am friendly with a few factors so will check when i am able, but thought id ask for opinion here. either way i expect i will be ordering new or used from the uk as things in general are much cheaper especially when it comes to car parts.
