New 1.8 tsi - benefit of DSG experience gratefully received

Featured Replies

My new Octavia is nearly here (1.8 tsi dsg gearbox) and I'd like to hear what I should look out for. I am already well used to a conventional CVT auto on my Audi A4. Obviously DSG problems are in my mind.

In particular (from the forum posts):=

Should I expect to have some hesitation and be especially careful when coasting up to roundabouts?

Will reversing be a slow process and should be taken carefully?

Or am I worrying unduly and DSG software upgrades have cleared problems?

I know I have to programme the electric seats and windows with keys but there is good info on this topic from members on other posts.

with thanks

Tom

I've got 2012 2.0 tsi vrs with dsg. With regards to the dsg I haven't experienced any of the hesitation. As for reversing I don't have any problems with it and I have to reverse up a steep drive with a skip on the drive as well.

I have had my DSG for about a week now. It drives just like a regular auto but is a lot smoother and quicker at changing. No issues with reversing or pulling out at roundabouts.

I get some stuttering on gear shifts on mine especially when the engine is hot, like after a 150-200 mile drive. I haven't a clue why it's like it.

The odd thing is when I get stuck in traffic & it gets hot & I go away, there's no stuttering at all. :wonder:

Mine had novelty factor for about 9 months then I slowly began to get Irritated by it, this developed into near hatred and led me into changing my car back to a manual after only 2 years of ownership. It gets rave reviews but it wasnt for me. On a plus note the 1.8TSi engine I had was a peach. Hope you enjoy.

Drive it like you stole it and the gearbox learns your driving style ie quicker changes. I haven't noticed any hesitation approaching roundabouts but going down a steep incline it can get confused - simply click a paddle and problem solved though.

Yes my new one is like that, but presume its still learning my style of driving, today it has been really frustrating changing up and down at will when in relaity it could o just stayed in a gear!

Other than that I think the DSG is a great gearbox and I have nevr suffered from this hesitation that people mention, at the end of the day it can still change a lot faster than a manual so its all good from me, just going into the reverse though just allow that extra second going from drive to reverse thats all.

Enjoy!

If you flick the stick across in to 'tiptronic' I find it holds the gear better than using the paddles, even a long pull on the paddles to make it paddle only still gets overridden when going down a hill.

I did have the strangest experience the other day though, I drove a couple of miles from home to the gym, reversed into a parking space then went to edge forward a tad and it stalled :wonder: it's not done it since and I just put it down to the car having been stood unused for about a week.
