No electric windows if the lights are on

Featured Replies

Mk1 VRS 2004

Odd thing happened on the way home today. The electric windows don't work if the light are on (any setting). All the bulbs are ok. The windows sometimes jerk downwards slightly, but no further and not very often.

Turn the lights off and the windows are ok again

What could cause this?

Rain?

Fuse?

I recently cured my window gremlins, if like me it is likely rain has gotten into the wiring connector under the bendy rubbery thing connecting door to car. In my case it got into the car side connector causing bad earthing so very intermittent windows until finally more rain stopped them completely. Unclip the rubber cover and unplug the connectors and look for signs of water ingress. Clean and dry all contacts aswel as the connectors in the car and reassemble trying to make sure the rubber pipe seals better this time. I am guessing you are affected more with your lights on as the window switch should light up so that the earthing problem is the constant if that makes sense. Hope this helps.

No sign of water ingress but it appears that both windows don't work if the lights are on AND the dash lighting knob is any higher than the lowest setting.

With the lights on and the dash light turned right down then they are ok. When lights are off they are still ok.

This applies to both

Update: it's fixed itself.

Must be rain related
