312mm Upgrade - Recognised by Skoda?

Featured Replies

Either way the answer to the original question is no.

The fitting of 312mm brakes won't be recognised by Skoda as they have not been type approved.

I got brembo front brakes. Not because they stop me better, because they look fecking huge behind the wheels! Haha

  • The dealer will not fit parts not designed for the car - and rightly so. Yeah they might fit and yeah deluded people on forums might think its some sort of 'upgrade' but its still not right. In term

  • Not saying you are wrong but why would manufcaturers fit bigger brakes if it was just a cooling issue? There MUST be more benefits than that (at least what i tell myself) Sounds like they were pote

What's the mass difference between the set-ups, anyone measured?

"bigger brakes = more heat dissipated = less fade = more efficient retardation implies bigger brakes slow you down better?"

(Quote's busted)

Hmmnn, "better" is not really a good description. They'll slow you down "better", or more efficiently because they'll be working at lower temperatures & therefore working at higher efficiency for longer. When brakes heat up, the gases released by the pad-material as it wears reduce the efficiency, so cooler is better (less gas-release). Bigger discs increases the surface area and therefore the heat-sink and heat-release.

That's why ceramic & carbon discs work better, they can operate at higher temperatures without losing efficiency, unlike steel.

Thanks Tech1e. If they haven't managed to fit them, i'll have to try to find a garage that can. :(

If they haven't managed to fit them, type approved or not if you have supplied the right parts it's a pretty poor show.

My 312's were great ferrodo ds2500 pads and race fluid never faded once on 25 laps of the ring (not consecutive of course lok)

In terms of it being an upgrade it will 100% not stop you any better. A larger disk may allow better cooling, therefore better fade resistance but the whole "wow the car stops shorter" its a no go I'm afraid. If you can trigger the ABS on standard brakes (which you can unless there is a fault) then the limitation is tyre grip. The 0.1% before the wheel locks is optimum braking. You could have brakes off a Veyron and they will not stop you faster, they just mean its way easier to trigger the ABS.

The biggest factor for braking is the tyres. Buy some Toyos (not 888) or other budget tyre and you are not stopping as quick as a premium brand such as a Michelien Pilot Sport PS3. This is a fact and something people miss when modifying their car. Better tyres also mean better handling and safety too.

Pet hate of mine is the whole brake 'upgrade' so just feel free to ignore thsi post :-)

Total rubbish

You try and tell my my 323 brembo's didnt stop quicker than my standard 288's id say you were on drugs

Especially round town! You hit the brembo's you face plant the windscreen saved my bacon a few times

Larger carriers aside is it the consensus here that the "Ferodo DS2500's" are one of the best pads for a standard brake Fab vRS??

If so where is the best place to buy them?

They didn't manage to fit them, they just said they used one of the nipples on the current brakes and that was it. They also charged me £37.48 for it!!

A holes! Do it your self. Once the wheel is off its like only four things need undoing and that's it disc and calliper off.

I would but i'm the nervy type and will probably f*** something up. It's also a bit difficult with where i'm living as no private driveway and any tools are at my family home in the West Mids. :(

Ahem, find a "normal" garage to do it? :p

What Fred44 is saying, is "if you can already lock up (or trigger ABS) with your existing brakes, then an upgrade won't make much difference in a single stop." And he's right. But from that point it gets a lot more complicated and more difficult to nail down exactly what you need in a brake upgrade.

Most cars in factory form can lockup the brakes/trigger the ABS on a panic stop. So in that situation more braking power (bigger rotors, calipers with more clamping force, more aggressive pads etc) won't offer much more. They'll just reduce the pedal effort needed to get the same result.

Comparing 323mm Brembos to standard 288's is quite an extreme comparison and you'd expect the Brembos to stop harder for the same pedal force. But the differences will be greatest when you've reached the point where the stock brakes have gone all hot and soggy. Such an upgrade would be overkill for people who don't ever get the brakes hot.

I've "upgraded" the brakes in two of my vehicles. One got larger brakes and matching calipers (factory items from a larger vehicle). Went from 250mm to 280mm discs. Turned it from average to quite good.

The other went from solid rotors to vented rotors the same size and got calipers with 25% bigger pistons. Two different upgrades done at the same time. Vented rotors don't give any more braking power but stop it all turning to custard when towing downhill. The bigger pistons gave more raw braking force with the same size disc, I didn't want to go to a larger wheel.

If they are saying something about bleed nipples then maybe they were seized on your vRS brakes? Without a clear understanding of why they couldnt fit them it's difficult to comment reallly.

All they said was that the calipers were the wrong sort. I'll try to get some pictures of them later and see if anyone can determine whether they look right or not. I was told they were off the Mk1 Octavia vRS but you never know when you buy blind off eBay.

One thing that you should take away from this disaster is, never expect a main dealer to fit parts that were not supplied by them specifically for use on the car you have asked them to work on. Its just not worth their good name and conditions of being a main dealer to accept any "third party" supplied parts for them to fit. I've frequently bought parts in via my main dealer for them to fit when I've known that they were not stocked items and didn't want have to leave the car in until they could source the necessary parts - and I've always provided the sales receipt to prove the provenance of the supplied parts.

This is the only caliper they unwrapped....

Does it look correct to anyone??

I'm wondering if these are 323mm.

I've been fleeced by a "normal" garage in the past. :( I wonder why i'm so unlucky!! :D

The other one....

They are the right sort, however that first one they unwrapped is missing a bleed nipple.

I think that's what they used on my current brakes, apparently. He mentioned they used a nipple, so i'm guessing that's why.

I'm glad they're the right sort, i had visions of trying to sell and buy the right ones!! :D

Thanks Tech1e.

Yup they'll be fine! Few heavy stops and the surface rust will be gone

Saves me spending more money for new discs if i can use these for a bit and then get some in a couple of months. :)
