Looking at 4x4 2.0TDi CR 170, advice please

Featured Replies

Hi all, I am going to look at an 09 4x4 2.0TDi CR 170, manual, Due to it having 70K on it I have rang Skoda who have advised that the cam-belt change is 120K or 4 year, £550, which ever first, they also recommended checking that the Haldex oil was change at 40K,

Thought the quoted 120K was high for the cam-belt so rang local Lion Garage, VAG specialists, they said 80K, £380 including VAG waterpump, and no time limit as thats a con, also said price for Haldex oil change depends on the system and ranges from £60 - £100.

Just wondered if anyone has paid for an Haldex oil change and how much, and also does everyone agree with the Lion Garage about the cam-belt change?

Looking at it as I tow a 1490kg caravan and its seems the best option, any advice of what to look out for as nearly everything I have read is there pretty bullet proof and nothing to worry about. Im just a bit apprehensive about buying a 4x4 and running costs.

Cheers

I can't really add much to this thread concerning cam belts and oil changes but I can say I have a 2012 2.0 170 Tdi 4x4 manual Elegance Twindoor and I tow a 1500kg caravan - it tows like a train......magic!

4 years cam belt is a VW UK con to boost after-warranty dealership income, outside UK no one mentions time limit on the belt.

120k is a long standing value, been there since 1.9TDI IP times, went down for a moment for PDs then they changed tensioner and it again went to 120k.

Newer CR engines with improved belt and gear design have wear limits in 130k - 180k miles range....

Haldex coupling oil (and I think there's a replaceable filter for it?) does need to be changed, it is also worth changing gearbox oil near 70k-80k mark, and definitely before car's 5th birthday. Takes little time and really does not cost all that much, and you would not believe how bad the "lifetime" VW fluid looks after a few years. Use correct VW oils for both gearbox and haldex clutch to get best results.
