1.6CR TDI fuel consumption - DPF burns a lot of diesel around town

Featured Replies

Having spent more time in the workshop than my garage, this Roomster was becoming an issue but there is a surprise outcome.

Monday afternoon, it was totally dead after being left in the company carpark since 08:00, no power except for the security. Called out the Skoda Assist and booster start to the local dealer (Heritage of Yeovil) After a call to the vendor, Westover Skoda Salisbury, the Roomster has spent a day getting proper attention from Heritage and what a difference in dealers.

I cannot recommend Westover Skoda Salisbury, the 'well-known' fault should have been identified at the outset as it caused all the problems, the battery earth lead was high resistance. This caused the engine to idle at an excessive speed, this also gave the impression of a failing clutch, excessive fuel consumption and the total electrical failure.

Unfortunately, the vendor preferrred to deny that there was a problem with the vehicle and the excessive consumption was due to my 'carefull' driving style (too slow) causing the DPF to regenerate but this was a red-herring as the DPF light never illuminated because the DPF was OK. Instead, if the vendor had sent the vehicle for a full diagnostic check by an experienced workshop, this would have been avoided by changing the battery earth lead.

The DPF was not the problem.

I forgot to add that Heritage Skoda of Yeovil are truly excellent and I have bought all but one of my Skodas from them, wonderful service.

I watched Watchdog last week where they tried to get maximum mpg out of Ford Fiesta from a trip from Brent Cross, London to Scotland. They stripped the car of seats, trim and even the headlining to lower the weight. Bearing in  mind Ford's figures quoted was 67.5mpg. The best mpg Watchdog achieved was 50 mpg at a steady 60mph. I get that from my 1.2 tsi with the seats, headlining and a full load. Last summer I went to Southend and got 54mpg along the M25 and Southend arterial (A127) at a steady 50mph. Those VW petrol engines have good mpg!

A month or so has passed and the Roomster is returning good mpg, nothing exceptional but always around 50mpg.

Today, I invested in a re-map at M-Tech near Shaftesbury, the result is nothing short of astounding. The 1.6 Tdi CR 105 motor is common to the VAG range and capable of hauling the Golf Tdi at decent speeds therefore the transformation of the Skoda Roomster to 140hp is rather good, even better is the re-mapping of the 1.6Tdi CR 65 motor to 140hp.

Neither is the mpg is not adversely affected, it reached 57mpg on the return journey.
