Can I have a drum roll please- Final bill is in!- And still problems

If all of the gears have increased by the same amount, then it would suggest that there is a single cause, otherwise you'd expect there to be various differences between the gears.

  • Yup! And they can get it bloody sorted. Guess the garage will just have to recoup their extra costs from the gearbox place. Phil

True.

They have all been pretty much shifted by 1000rpm with some small differences (probably down to the different ratios).

Will just have to leave it in their hands and see what they say.

Thanks for the help and moral support guys

I guess whatever it is, it's not going to cost you anything extra, money wise at least.

Hell to the no sister!

We had same once at work got a reconned box for a old volvo 440 diesel put it in and it went like hell upto 80 but wouldnt do anymore,

Turned out it was a petrol box and all ratios were to pot, we ended up taking it back out again.

Whatever they have done they have rebuilt it with petrol spec bits

Any news Phil?

Once its finally sorted they should offer to throw in a free rubber ring to sit on.

No news yet.

The box should have gone back to them today and should hopefully have it back some time this week. Just really hope it's right.

Was a huge inconvenience not having a car this evening. Out little bunny rabbit was very poorly and had to beg a lift from an elderly neighbour to the vets!

Small update.

The gearbox specialist actually picked up the whole car this time round.

They have now realised that they have used the completely wrong gearset for that car (most likely used petrol gears as said above).

They currently can't get hold of the right set of gears that we need and so are waiting to get hold of them.

So no ETA on when we will have the car back.

No chance of a courtesy car either as the garage don't have any to cut down on costs.

Phil

Blimey!

You're really not having much luck at all with this fiasco.

Any chance of them refunding you some of the costs due to their ****ups?

Surely as a goodwill gesture they'll sort you a hire car (or part of), should you need one? It's blatantly obvious that it's their fault and not down to anything you've done so they can't wiggle out of accepting responsibility...

That's a really poor service after you've paid soo much m8.

Car is back!

Got a call out the blue from garage. He said they have tested it and it seems right now. Thought I will reserve judgement until I've tried it myself!

Anyway. It turns out they had definitely used the wrong gears in the box and most likely used the gears from a petrol 6 speed box.

It's spot on now and back to how it should be! 70mph is back to being 1900rpm.

The clutch feels very nice and has a very nice feel to it. Seems to bite really nice and hard now whereas it always felt a little funny before. The clutch pedal now is much lighter whereas it was quite heavy before which the garage picked up on.

All the gears are silky smooth and no clunks, rattles, whines or cruntches.

Very pleased. Shame it took so long.

Have they offered you any sort of discount for your trouble?

To be honest we're just so glad to have the car back that we can't be bothered to chase them for money back.

I saved a fair bit of money by buying the clutch and dmf myself.

Just so glad they got it back to us in time for the weekend as we requested. Got a wedding to go to and although we could have got a lift it would have been in our friends 07 Punto 1.4 3 door with no A/C etc. Hate being in those kind of cars on long journeys. Needlessly revving at silly RPM at 70mph and can't keep up on hills etc! lol

Had a look at the gearbox on saturday before we went off to chester in the car.

It's a different box now. When we had it back before it was the same box but just looked cleaner.

This one looks like a different one and is all powercoated or painted silver.

Don't know if it's new or just a second hand recon box.

No problems anyway. Everything very smooth an absolute joy to drive on the motorway.

Phil

Glad to hear its all worked out in the end

Me too!

Here is a pic of the gearbox.

What do you reckon guys? Is it a reconditioned box they have put on that's been painted?

Also I have spotted a little dribble of oil coming from the box. I will keep an eye on it as it may just be some residual bits from filling the box but if it carrys on I will take to the garage to have a look.

Phil

That's been painted, as you can see when you look at the bolt heads.

As for the leak, I'd make sure your garage used new seals as they'll have been on and off twice.

how much was the rebuild?

Ah yes. Good point.

The rebuild itself was £485+vat.

Phil

cheers, mine's bust too :(

Oh dear. Well sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Mine was pretty much worse case scenario. It will depend what has broken in yours as to what needs doing.

I think the bearings had gone in mine and it basically ate itself!

Complete renewall of the gears was needed.

What engine/gearbox you got?

Phil

You better keep an eye on the oil level Phil, especially as you quite often do 130 mph runs on the autobhan!
