Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor

Featured Replies

Hi. Do anyone know where is the engine coolant temperature sensor on my '05 Octavia 2 BKD engine? I have to change it but I can not find it!

Thanks

There are 2 coolant sensors on a BKD engine, 1 is located down below the tandem pump thats the silver unit just to the left of the airbox/maf black tube, just below pump facing rear of engine, 2nd is in middle of front of engine behind the imf piping, needs very small hands, torch & allot of patients.

heres a pic of the first one

Lofty79....I think that one in the picture is the fuel temperature sensor! I don't have any issues with that! :p My engine is a bit hard to start when the coolant temp gets to 90 degrees so before to do a remap I would like to change the battery and the coolant temp sensor.

I will try to find the second one with my "small" hands :)

Thank you very much for your reply!

ah yes, im doing this from memory sorry

In that case it could be at back of head you should see a black plastic coolant housing

its located at lower corner towards bulkhead 4 or 2 wires black connector

should have green sender but early cars had black

Sensor number two for little hands is just fan switch i think.

here is a quote from another forum mate

"It's a pain to find - take off the battery and battery covers, and then feel around down the side of the engine block. It's fiddy to pull out as there isn't much space. There is a u-clip you need to pull out from the top of the sensor - this is tricky as it has a habit off falling into the engine floor. There will be a small amount of coolant loss when you pull out the old sensor. Don't forget the O-ring when you push the new one in!"

Thanks...one more question maybe you know a good answer :) If the A/C compressor doesn't work anymore, the small fan from the radiator will stop working as well?

Im not sure, i have two octy 1's with aircon, and when the fans come in for engine temp - both come on. However it is possible that one is for aircon, if it is, its possible that a broken compressor would stop it working i suppose. Others will be along to remove doubt by tonight i would have thought

Make sure the O ring comes out with the old sensor before you push the new one back in. If you are quick and have released the pressure in the system and put the cap back on then you will loose minimal coolant. I fashioned a container out of an old ice cream tub to catch most of the coolant and poured back in. I probably lost about 500ml at most
